Buying a pond liner from China: what to check

Specify the exact fish-contact formulation, finished usable dimensions, minimum thickness and seam acceptance checks. Inspect production material, prepare protective underlay and test the installed pond for leaks before concealing it. Specify the pond and the exact material

Give the factory a drawing showing the excavated profile, planting shelves, intended waterline, edge anchorage and any drains or pipe penetrations. State whether the pond will hold fish and describe exposed edges, cleaning products and installation conditions. Request the exact polymer, grade, reinforcement, formulation reference and compatible joining system. Use our product specification guide to organise the order brief.

Ask the supplier to explain its proposed rubber or plastic liner against your pond shape and installation method. Approve a labelled sample and keep a matching material reference. Require written approval before changes to the formulation, recycled content, reinforcement or seam materials. A roofing membrane or general waterproof sheet should not be accepted merely because it looks similar.

Check fish-contact evidence for the whole system

Request written suitability for continuous contact with pond water containing fish and aquatic plants. Ask for supporting test reports identifying the exact liner formulation, sample, test method, exposure conditions and results. Include seam tapes, adhesives, sealants and repair patches in the assessment. A polymer name, a drinking-water claim or an SDS alone does not establish suitability for your fish pond. Follow our test-report verification guide.

If you resell the liner, you remain responsible for its safety after placing it on the market. Keep the product and batch evidence with the installation instructions. For fish-contact suitability, ask a laboratory to assess any gaps between the submitted evidence and the proposed use before approving production. A successful leak test demonstrates water retention, not chemical suitability for fish.

Order usable dimensions and measurable thickness

Measure along the excavated contours in the length and width directions, following slopes and shelves rather than measuring only across the opening. Add the edge allowance required by the agreed anchorage detail. Specify finished usable dimensions after joining and trimming, with tolerances and measurement conditions. Separate usable coverage from roll width, panel size and material consumed by seam overlaps.

State nominal thickness and the minimum acceptable thickness, with the agreed measuring method. Ask for a calibrated thickness gauge suited to the material and measurements across the sheet, including edges and separate panels. Record individual readings rather than accepting an average alone. For reinforced material, distinguish total composite thickness from the waterproof layer. Do not infer thickness from weight or a supplier's description such as 'heavy duty'.

Inspect seams and protect the shipped liner

Request a seam layout and identify factory joins, site joins and penetration details. Agree the joining procedure, compatible consumables, preparation conditions and acceptance criteria before manufacture. Inspect for gaps, open edges, contamination, scorching, wrinkles through joins and repairs. Have representative seam coupons checked for peel and shear behaviour using a method appropriate to the material. Ask a specialist which non-destructive checks suit the actual seam construction.

Apply our inspection guide to the production liner, not just the approved sample. Record dimensions, thickness results, seam locations, defects and repairs against its batch identity. Specify packaging that prevents abrasion and punctures, without staples through the sheet. Agree the inspection evidence needed before shipment using our balance-payment checklist.

Prepare puncture protection before laying

Remove sharp stones, roots and debris, and prepare a smooth, stable supporting surface. Specify protective pond underlay appropriate to the substrate, covering shelves, slopes and edge details. Avoid unknown scrap materials with uncertain residues or compatibility. Plan protection above the liner where rocks, plant baskets or maintenance access could concentrate loads.

Unfold the liner carefully without dragging it across the ground. Leave it relaxed and supported in corners and around shelves, following the manufacturer's installation instructions. Fill gradually so it settles without being pulled taut. Keep tools and sharp footwear away, and check penetrations and edge anchorage before final trimming. Underlay reduces damage risk but cannot make a sharp or unstable base acceptable.

Leak-test before landscaping conceals the liner

Agree a holding period and acceptance criteria with the manufacturer or installer before filling. Test at the intended operating waterline while seams and fittings remain accessible. Isolate pumps, filters and waterfalls where possible to distinguish liner leakage from plumbing losses. Mark the level against a fixed reference and record weather, rainfall, top-ups and readings. A nearby water container with similar exposure can help indicate evaporation, but is only a comparison.

Investigate unexplained water loss, damp ground, leaking fittings and edges that draw water into surrounding soil. Repair with the approved system and repeat the test before adding concealing stonework, soil or planting. Recheck after final landscaping for damage caused during finishing. Keep photographs and the acceptance record. Prepare suitable water and establish filtration before introducing fish; never use live fish as a liner safety test.

Frequently asked questions

Is any rubber pond liner safe for fish?

Do not assume so from the material name. Obtain evidence for the exact formulation and intended fish-contact use, including joining and repair materials.

How do I calculate the pond liner size?

Measure along the excavated length and width contours, including slopes and shelves. Add the agreed anchorage allowance and order finished usable coverage after seams and trimming.

What thickness pond liner should I order?

Choose it with the manufacturer against the material, substrate, pond profile and protection system. Specify nominal and minimum thickness and agree how production measurements will be taken.

How do I test a pond liner for leaks?

Fill to the operating waterline before concealing it, isolate plumbing where possible and track the level over an agreed period. Account for weather and evaporation, then repair and retest unexplained loss.
