Getting started

Buying a China welder for a home workshop

Before ordering, verify the exact model's input current and duty cycle, have an electrician assess your supply, and agree compatible leads and gas fittings. Get competent advice on fume control, fire precautions and household protection. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to coordinate factory evidence and sample checks.

Define the job and collect model evidence

Write down the metals, thicknesses, coatings, welding process and likely welding duration. Send photographs of the workshop and proposed supply connection. This guide concerns conventional arc welders; handheld laser equipment needs a separate assessment. Use our welding machine sourcing guide for the wider factory checklist and our electrical import guide for import compliance.

Request the exact model's rating plate, English manual, declaration and complete test reports before paying. Match the model, supply configuration and included accessories across the documents and sample. Use our test report verification guide to check authenticity. Agree that component or accessory substitutions need your approval.

Verify input current and usable duty cycle

Ask for maximum and effective input-current ratings, supply voltage, frequency and phase, plus the manufacturer's specified circuit protection. Have a competent electrician assess the actual circuit, socket, earthing and protective devices against these details and your intended settings. Ask the electrician to explain how each input-current rating affects selection. A fitted domestic plug or low effective-current figure alone does not establish suitability.

Ask a competent test provider to verify input current under load and output current using calibrated equipment. Require duty-cycle results stating welding current, load voltage, test period, ambient temperature and cooling conditions. Duty cycle describes permitted welding time within a stated period, with cooling between runs. Match the tested operating point to your jobs and record thermal trips; a brief maximum-output demonstration is insufficient.

Specify leads and connectors as a complete system

Separate the mains lead from the welding output and return leads in your specification. Ask for conductor material, cross-section, length, insulation, connector type and current ratings, including torch and return clamp ratings. Have the assessor check the complete combination at your intended current and duty cycle. Clarify the distinction between the welding return clamp and protective earthing.

If an extension is needed, ask the electrician to specify its length, cable and connections for the load and workshop conditions. Fully unwind a cable reel before use. Keep connections away from sparks and route cables clear of household access. Our extension cable reel guide covers purchasing checks. Do not solve supply incompatibility with a travel adaptor or improvised connector.

Arrange shielding gas before buying

Confirm whether your chosen process and consumable need shielding gas, and obtain the specified gas composition and flow guidance. Ask a local gas supplier to confirm cylinder availability, supply terms and compatible valve fittings. Agree the regulator, flowmeter, hose, torch connection and leak-check method together. Check what the machine package actually includes before importing a cylinder or regulator.

Ask a competent person to plan cylinder restraint, storage, handling, valve closure and ventilation. Shielding gases can displace air in enclosed spaces, so flag pits, basements and poorly ventilated corners during assessment. Ask how extraction and draughts will affect gas shielding. A gasless process still needs a fume assessment.

Get a competent assessment of fumes

All welding fume can cause lung cancer. Before ordering, commission someone competent in welding fume control to assess the actual materials, coatings, consumables, process and room. Include routes into living areas and exposure of anyone nearby. Ask whether a different process or cold joining method would suit the job. An open garage door alone is not evidence of adequate control.

Ask for a written plan covering capture at source, general ventilation, discharge location and any respiratory protection, including wearer suitability and compatibility with the welding helmet. Have extraction performance checked during representative welding before routine use. Keep household members outside the assessed work area. Resolve how fumes will be cleared before they return.

Assess fire risks and protect the household

Have a competent hot-work assessor review combustibles, concealed voids, adjacent rooms, cylinder locations and escape routes. Remove movable combustible materials and agree suitable protection for what remains, emergency arrangements and checks during and after welding. Never apply heat to containers that may hold flammable residues. Ask the assessor to decide the necessary fire-watch arrangements for your setting.

Plan welding screens to protect others from direct and reflected arc light, control access by children and visitors, and select suitable eye, skin and hand protection. Use our welding helmet assessment guide for helmet checks. Hold the order until the model evidence, supply assessment, accessory specification, gas arrangements and workshop control plan are resolved. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate factory evidence and sample checks.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run a Chinese welder from a normal UK socket?

Have an electrician compare verified input-current ratings and the manufacturer's instructions with your actual circuit, socket and protection. A fitted plug alone does not confirm suitability.

How do I check a welder's duty cycle before buying?

Request a report for the exact model stating current, load voltage, test period, ambient temperature and cooling conditions. Have a competent test provider verify the operating point you intend to use.

Is a gasless welder safer in a home workshop?

Gasless does not mean fume-free. Ask a competent assessor to compare the process, consumables and materials, then specify suitable fume controls and protection for people nearby.

Is an open garage door enough ventilation for welding?

Do not assume so. Get a competent assessment of fume capture, general ventilation and exposure in adjoining living areas. Agree how to protect household members before buying.
