Getting started

Is a China-bought TV box legal in the UK?

Confirm the named service, seller authorisation and bundled account directly with the content provider for UK use. Free content can be legitimate, but a working stream or payment to the box seller does not establish permission. Pause doubtful use or sales. Supplier enquiries can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Separate the box from the content

UK government guidance says streaming devices are legal when used for legitimate free-to-air content. Assess the services and installed software, rather than deciding from the box’s country of manufacture. A promise of free films or sport needs an explanation of who provides the content and how access is authorised.

Ask the seller for the device model, installed applications, add-ons, service names and exact channels or film catalogues promised. Keep the listing and demonstration screenshots. Use our counterfeit goods guide for branded hardware checks; those checks do not resolve streaming permission.

Confirm authorisation with the content provider

Find the broadcaster or streaming provider through independently located contact details. Send the seller’s name, service description and claimed authorisation. Ask whether the provider recognises the seller, permits the offered access in the UK and supports the particular application and device. Request confirmation covering the actual channels or catalogue offered.

Ask whether the proposed account covers your intended use, including resale bundles or viewing by customers at business premises. Do not treat a provider logo, successful playback or a seller’s certificate as confirmation. Check the seller’s identity separately using supplier verification before payment. Pause if the provider cannot confirm the arrangement.

Check what the preloaded subscription includes

Ask whose name the account is in, who paid the provider, how you activate it and whether you control its recovery details. Obtain the subscription terms, expiry, renewal arrangements and evidence linking the entitlement to your purchase. Ask the provider to confirm any reseller voucher, transferred account or shared login before relying on it.

A payment receipt from the box seller shows what you bought, but does not establish content-provider permission. Treat unexplained shared credentials, replacement logins and instructions to conceal your location as reasons to stop and investigate. Put the approved applications, account arrangements and prohibition on substitutions into your product specification.

Understand the UK copyright risk

The Intellectual Property Office says accessing illegal content through an unauthorised website, application, add-on or modified device infringes copyright and may constitute a crime. Do not assume that watching without saving a film removes that risk. Judge the source and its permission, rather than whether the stream downloads a permanent file.

Government guidance also warns that sellers of boxes adapted for illegal access face fines and imprisonment. If buying for resale, pause shipment and sales while permission is unresolved. Ask a UK intellectual property solicitor to assess the actual software, access arrangement and advertising before approving a disputed bundle.

If you have already bought the box

Stop using doubtful services and preserve the advert, invoice, messages, application names and account details securely. Government guidance says devices can be used legally after removing the illicit software, with advice if needed. Have someone competent identify and remove it, then approach the relevant provider for authorised access. Do not assume a reset resolves every concern.

Ask the seller in writing for authorisation evidence or a proposed return and refund. For business stock, separate affected units and record which customers received them. Seek advice before altering evidence if a dispute or investigation is underway. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can coordinate supplier enquiries through our supplier problems service; provider confirmation remains a separate check.

Frequently asked questions

Are all TV boxes from China illegal in the UK?

No. UK guidance recognises legitimate free-to-air use. Check the installed software, content source and provider permission for the actual service offered.

Does paying for a preloaded subscription make it legal?

Payment to the seller does not establish provider permission. Ask the provider to confirm the seller, account entitlement, UK access and intended use.

Can I legally stream films if I do not download them?

Accessing illegal content can infringe copyright and may constitute a crime. The absence of a permanent download does not establish permission.

What should I do with a TV box I already bought?

Stop doubtful streams, preserve purchase evidence and check with the provider. Seek help to remove illicit software. Ask the seller for a remedy and pause resale while the arrangement is unresolved.
