Getting started

Can I buy a split air conditioner from China?

Yes, provided the exact equipment passes the applicable import checks and a suitably qualified installer agrees to install and commission it. Identify the refrigerant and get written acceptance before paying a deposit. For help gathering the factory documents, contact Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the refrigerant and shipping condition

Ask the factory for photographs of the actual rating labels, the refrigerant designation, charge mass, SDS and installation manual. Establish whether the outdoor unit and pipework contain refrigerant, contain only a holding gas, or arrive empty. Have the installer reconcile these details with the exact indoor and outdoor model combination.

Products containing regulated fluorinated gas must be labelled when produced, imported or installed. Ask your compliance adviser to review the proposed labels. If the supplier proposes another refrigerant, have the installer review its handling hazards, room suitability and installation instructions before accepting the equipment.

Check the import route before dispatch

For delivery to England, Scotland or Wales, have the proposed importer calculate the carbon dioxide equivalent quantity to determine whether fluorinated-gas registration and quota authorisations apply. Give them the refrigerant, charge mass and annual import totals. Ask for a written decision covering applicable authorisations, declarations and reporting. Use our precharged equipment paperwork guide for the supporting import file. For Northern Ireland, obtain advice specific to that destination.

Equipment containing banned fluorinated gases must not be placed on the market in Great Britain. Have the adviser check the exact refrigerant and system configuration against current bans before ordering. Use our electrical imports guide for the wider product review. Ask the customs agent to confirm classification, customs paperwork, duty and VAT treatment, and who will act as importer.

Check the technician and the installation business

Anyone working on equipment containing fluorinated gas needs their own qualifications. Company certification is also required for businesses, including sole traders, servicing someone else's stationary equipment containing fluorinated gas. Ask for the technician's qualification and the business certificate, verify them with the issuing bodies, and confirm their scope covers the proposed installation work.

Arrange an electrician's review of the supply, circuit, isolation and connection requirements. Our electrician checks guide provides related preparation for an imported electrical fitting. Ask separately about the home's building-control route and any planning or property permissions for the proposed outdoor position.

Get written acceptance of the exact equipment

Send the installer the model references, labels, manuals, wiring diagrams, dimensions and proposed layout before paying a deposit. Include pipe routing, drainage, outdoor supports, access and controls. Request written acceptance naming the precise indoor and outdoor combination, refrigerant and supplied accessories, together with any conditions or missing evidence.

Ask explicitly whether the installer accepts customer-supplied equipment and will take responsibility for commissioning it. Agree installation scope, exclusions, additional materials, fault diagnosis and warranty labour. Record the accepted configuration in your product specification, and require renewed installer acceptance before approving a factory substitution.

Assign commissioning and handover responsibility

Name the contractor responsible for commissioning and coordinating any separate electrical work. Ask them to specify the checks they will perform under the manufacturer's instructions, including pipework testing, evacuation, refrigerant charging where needed, drainage and operating tests. Agree how damage, incompatible parts or missing instructions will be handled before installation starts.

Request a commissioning record identifying the installed models, serial references, refrigerant and final charge, with test results and outstanding defects. Agree the electrical paperwork and any building-control documents applicable to the work. Keep these with the manuals, purchase documents and warranty contacts. Arrange a maintenance contact before accepting the completed installation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a precharged split air conditioner myself?

Precharging does not remove qualification requirements for work on equipment containing fluorinated gas. Have a qualified installer review the exact system and agree who will install and commission it.

Will a UK installer fit an air conditioner I bought?

Ask before ordering. Send the exact model combination, refrigerant details and manuals, then obtain written acceptance covering installation, commissioning and customer-supplied equipment.

Does a home air conditioner need import quota?

Have the proposed importer calculate the carbon dioxide equivalent quantity and assess the applicable registration and authorisation rules. Do not assume that every home order needs quota authorisation.

Who commissions an imported split air conditioner?

Agree a named contractor before buying. Their written scope should cover commissioning, coordination with the electrician, test records and handling equipment faults.
