How to check trolley jacks, axle stands and ramps

Match the equipment to its load reports and instructions, confirm compatibility with your vehicle's approved support points, and inspect its condition and locks. Never work underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack. Resolve uncertainty through competent assessment before use. Factory evidence can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Establish what the exact model can support

Obtain the manufacturer's instructions, readable rating labels and complete load-test reports for the supplied model. Ask whether the rating applies to an individual stand or ramp, or a matched pair, and what configuration and height it covers. Do not divide the vehicle's weight equally between supports or infer capacity from appearance. Ask a competent assessor to establish the load each item will carry during the intended repair.

Request evidence covering strength, stability and locking performance, with the test conditions and acceptance criteria. Match the tested construction, saddle, column, locking parts and ramp material to the goods received. A seller video cannot establish these matches or reveal omitted tests. Use our test report verification guide for authentication rather than repeating that process here.

Check the vehicle and support geometry

Use the vehicle manufacturer's instructions to identify permitted lifting and supporting locations. Confirm which points suit a trolley jack and which suit stands. Check saddle shape, contact area, approved adapters, reach and height against those locations. If the jack occupies the intended stand position, get a vehicle-specific lifting and support plan. Do not improvise a nearby support point or stack loose packing beneath the equipment.

For drive-on ramps, check tyre width, approach clearance, wheel seating, end stops and any detachable sections against the instructions. Ramps support the tyres, so they are unsuitable for a task that requires those wheels to be removed. Ask the assessor to consider how removing heavy components or applying repair forces could change vehicle stability.

Inspect the structure and locking mechanisms

Before applying a load, compare the assembled equipment with its instructions and inspect for cracks, distortion, corrosion, damaged welds, missing parts and hydraulic leaks. Check that bases sit properly and moving parts operate as described. For stands, examine pin holes or ratchet teeth, the pawl, retaining parts and release handle. A click alone does not confirm full engagement. Quarantine anything damaged, incomplete or inconsistent with the documented model.

HSE guidance says stand pins should fit closely and meet the correct specification; screwdrivers and bolts are unacceptable substitutes. Confirm that any secondary lock is present and engaged as instructed. For folding or adjustable ramps, check the specified locks and retained connectors. A trolley jack's release valve or overload protection does not make it a substitute for axle stands.

Assess the setup before going underneath

HSE advises against relying on jacks alone to support a vehicle. For a jack-lifted vehicle, use suitable axle stands at the approved support points before working underneath. Check that the ground is hard, level and capable of supporting the setup, and secure wheels remaining on the ground with suitable chocks. Follow the equipment and vehicle instructions for lifting, positioning and transferring the load.

Keep everyone clear of the underside during setup and initial checks. Do not improvise a proof-load test, deliberately overload the equipment or treat rocking the vehicle as certification. If a support tilts, a lock moves, contact is uncertain or the jack sinks unexpectedly, stop and arrange safe recovery by someone competent. Have the assessed arrangement demonstrated before attempting the repair yourself.

Use competent assessment to close the gaps

Choose an assessor with relevant experience of vehicle lifting and support equipment. A vehicle technician can assess support-point compatibility and the repair setup; a lifting-equipment engineer or suitable laboratory may be needed to assess construction, locks and load evidence. Ask for a written conclusion covering the exact equipment, vehicle, task, limitations and unresolved findings. A visual inspection cannot establish an undocumented load capacity.

Keep the equipment out of use until missing evidence, defects and compatibility questions are resolved. Confirm with the relevant authority or a customs broker which requirements apply when importing for yourself; our own-use imports guide helps you prepare that separate review. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can obtain factory drawings, instructions and model evidence and coordinate specialist testing. Factory checks do not establish that your home setup is suitable.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trust a seller video showing a car on the stands?

It can show operation, but cannot establish model identity, rated capacity, test coverage or hidden defects. Obtain matching reports and instructions, then have unresolved questions assessed.

Is the axle stand rating per stand or per pair?

Check the exact model's label, instructions and supporting report. Ask the manufacturer to resolve any ambiguity in writing. Do not assume the advertised rating applies to each stand.

What if my jack blocks the axle stand position?

Stop and obtain a vehicle-specific lifting and support plan from a competent technician. Do not choose an adjacent point or improvised adapter simply because it fits.

Can I test an unknown jack or ramp with my car?

Do not use your vehicle as an improvised proof load. Have a competent assessor review the model evidence and condition, and arrange controlled testing where needed before use.
