Does charity logo merchandise qualify for VAT relief?
No. Putting your charity logo on merchandise does not turn the goods into zero-rated advertising. HMRC distinguishes buying advertising space on an item from buying the item itself. Other reliefs need their own basis. Cambridge China Bridge can help you specify and source the goods.

Identify what you are buying
A purchase of printed pens or adult clothing is a purchase of merchandise, even when the logo promotes your charity. HMRC excludes commemorative items bearing a charity logo from advertising relief. Start with the actual deliverable: goods you will receive, or advertising space supplied to your charity.
Advertising space is a different supply
HMRC allows zero rating for qualifying advertising space sold to a charity on items such as clothing. It expressly distinguishes that space from the sale of the items themselves, which needs another applicable relief. Ask the supplier to explain what advertising space is being sold and how the advertisement will reach the public.
Check artwork charges against the intended advertisement
Design or production services can qualify where the intended advertisement meets HMRC’s advertising conditions. Do not assume that a separately listed logo artwork or printing charge qualifies. Ask your VAT adviser to assess the actual work and intended use before accepting a quote described as charity advertising.
Get the VAT basis in writing
HMRC makes the supplier responsible for applying the correct VAT rate, and the charity must provide evidence of its charitable status. Ask the supplier to record the relief being claimed and why the supply qualifies. For a goods order, describe the product, decoration and intended use accurately rather than asking for an advertising label.

Build the purchase file before approving production
Keep the quote, product specification, intended use and written VAT explanation together. Ask your adviser and customs agent to confirm the import VAT treatment separately before fixing the budget. Use our charity import budgeting guide for that discussion and our landed price guide to assemble the costs.
Once the tax basis is settled, use our promotional merchandise guide for print samples and product responsibilities. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can help coordinate the factory specification, sample approval and inspection.
Frequently asked questions
Does printing our charity logo make merchandise VAT-free?
No. The logo does not turn the goods into qualifying advertising. HMRC distinguishes advertising space from the items themselves.
Can a charity buy advertising space on clothing VAT-free?
Qualifying advertising space sold to a charity can be zero-rated. Buying the clothing itself is a different supply and needs its own basis for relief.
Is a separate logo design charge zero-rated?
Not automatically. Design relief depends on the intended advertisement meeting HMRC’s advertising conditions. Ask for a written assessment of the actual work.
What should we ask for before placing the order?
Ask for an accurate goods description, a written VAT basis and confirmation of import VAT treatment. Keep these with the specification and approved sample.
