CE or CE with UKNI for Northern Ireland?
For a China-made product requiring CE marking in Northern Ireland, use CE alone where self-declaration is permitted or an EU notified body performs mandatory assessment. Add UKNI when a UK Northern Ireland notified body performs that assessment. Cambridge China Bridge can help gather the factory documents.

Start with the product, not the factory's certificate
Not every product needs a conformity marking. Establish which Northern Ireland product rules cover your exact model and whether they require CE marking and mandatory third-party assessment. The route depends on those rules, rather than a supplier's preference.
Our CE, UKCA and ISO guide explains the general distinction between markings, certificates and test reports. This guide addresses the Northern Ireland assessment decision.
Choose the marking from the assessment route
For a product within the CE regime, use the applicable route below. UKNI is never used on its own.
| Route | Marking for Northern Ireland | What to establish |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer self-declaration is permitted | CE alone | Why the product rules permit this route |
| Mandatory assessment by an EU notified body | CE alone | The body's identity and relevant product scope |
| Mandatory assessment by a UK Northern Ireland notified body | CE with UKNI | Its Northern Ireland notified-body status and relevant product scope |
Check the assessing body, not just the test address
UK bodies undertaking this work are called Northern Ireland notified bodies; that name does not mean they must be located in Northern Ireland. GOV.UK identifies them as UK-based bodies. It also notes that UK and EU conformity assessment bodies can be located in a third country under a mutual recognition agreement.
Ask which legal entity performs the mandatory assessment, where it is based and under which recognised status it acts. Match its identity and scope to the official body register. A Chinese laboratory address or an international testing company's logo is insufficient information to choose the marking.
Self-declaration still needs supporting documents
Self-declaration is available only where the applicable product rules permit it. Paying a laboratory to test a sample does not, by itself, establish whether you have followed the mandatory notified-body route.
Ask the factory for the technical file, the applicable declaration and a written explanation of the assessment route. Compare the model, materials, components and intended use with your order. Settle the route before printing or production
Put the destination market, product configuration, assessment route, assessing entity and proposed marking into the supplier brief. Ask for document copies and draft artwork before approving production. Resolve mismatched company names, model references or assessment scopes before accepting the paperwork.
Cambridge China Bridge can use its own staff in China to gather factory information and compare the order specification with the documents supplied. Use our testing and certification service when you need help arranging the document or assessment work.
Frequently asked questions
Does every China-made product need UKNI in Northern Ireland?
No. For products requiring CE marking, UKNI accompanies CE when a UK Northern Ireland notified body performs mandatory third-party assessment. It is not a general mark for Chinese imports.
Can I self-declare CE for Northern Ireland?
Yes, where the applicable product rules permit self-declaration. Establish that route for your exact product and obtain its supporting technical documentation and declaration.
Does testing in China decide whether I need UKNI?
A test location alone is insufficient. Ask which entity performs any mandatory conformity assessment and whether it acts as an EU notified body or a UK Northern Ireland notified body.
Must a Northern Ireland notified body be based in Northern Ireland?
The name describes its assessment role. GOV.UK lists UK-based Northern Ireland notified bodies. Check the particular body's recognised status, location and product scope.
