Getting started

Can a UK seller cancel an order for a price mistake?

Possibly, but first establish whether the seller accepted your order and what basis it gives for cancelling. A pricing-mistake argument needs more than a corrected listing. Preserve the original terms and messages, request repayment details and seek advice if acceptance is disputed. Discuss the sourcing records with Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the buyer and the contracting seller

Start by recording whether you bought for personal use or for your business. A consumer is an individual acting wholly or mainly outside their trade, business, craft or profession. For resale stock or business equipment, ask your adviser to assess the business contract rather than assume consumer protections apply.

Match the seller’s legal name across the checkout, invoice and payment record. China-made goods may have been ordered from a UK seller or through an agent. Use our guide to seller and agent roles to identify the counterparty before challenging the cancellation. For separately purchased services, see our guide to sourcing and inspection service cancellation.

Separate receipt of the order from acceptance

Contract formation requires an offer and acceptance. Save the terms shown when you ordered, then compare their acceptance wording with the checkout message, emails and subsequent actions. Ask the seller to identify whether it says your order was never accepted or that an existing contract has been cancelled. For online orders collected in person, see our click-and-collect cancellation guide.

Read the actual wording rather than relying on a heading such as ‘order confirmation’. Does the message merely acknowledge receipt, or expressly accept the order? If the terms refer to acceptance on dispatch, request the relevant dispatch record. Include captured payments and invoices in the review, and ask an adviser to assess the documents together.

Test the claim that the mistake was obvious

For England and Wales, the Law Commission explains that the retailer’s pricing-mistake argument requires proof that the consumer knew of its mistake. Ask what evidence the seller relies on. Preserve sale banners, discount explanations, product condition and pack descriptions that explain why you understood the advertised price to be intentional.

Check whether the disputed price concerned an individual item, a pack, a deposit or the complete order. Separate a claimed original error from a later cost increase, covered in contract price increases. Our advertised consumer price guide covers displayed totals. For consumer purchases, an unfair contract term is not binding on the consumer; ask an adviser to review any cancellation clause.

Request repayment and track the money

If the seller refuses supply, request repayment of everything actually collected for that order, including delivery charges. Ask for the amount, payment method, processing date and transaction reference in writing. If anything is deducted, request the contractual basis and calculation. Keep a repayment request separate from any proposal to buy again at a different price.

Check your payment account for money received rather than treating a refund email as completion. Ask your bank whether a pending authorisation was released or a collected payment was refunded. If repayment stalls, give the payment provider the cancellation message and transaction evidence, and ask which dispute process and deadline apply.

Prepare a bundle for advice

Keep the original listing and checkout screenshots, dated terms, order messages, invoice, payment record, cancellation explanation and refund correspondence. Add a chronology showing what happened before and after the seller alleged the error. State the outcome you want and identify disputed facts. For escalation after an unresolved complaint, use our UK seller dispute guide.

For a consumer purchase, contact Citizens Advice in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland in Scotland, or Consumerline in Northern Ireland. Explain the purchase purpose, acceptance wording, alleged mistake and repayment status. For a business purchase, take the same bundle to your solicitor. Include any quotation or factory correspondence held by Cambridge China Bridge.

Frequently asked questions

Does an order confirmation mean my order was accepted?

Read its wording alongside the terms shown when you ordered. Ask whether it acknowledges receipt or expressly accepts the order, and include payment and dispatch records in the review.

Can a seller cancel because the price was obviously wrong?

Check acceptance first. For England and Wales, the Law Commission says the retailer’s mistake argument requires proof that the consumer knew of the mistake. Preserve the promotion and product details.

What should I ask for if the seller cancels?

Request repayment of everything collected for the order, with the amount, method, processing date and reference. Ask for the basis of any deduction and check that the money reaches your account.

What evidence do I need for consumer advice?

Keep the listing, checkout, original terms, order emails, invoice, payment evidence, cancellation and refund messages. Add a chronology and explain whether you bought for personal or business use.
