Getting started

Buying smoke or haze machines from China

Before ordering, agree the exact machine and manufacturer-approved fluid, an exposure assessment, ventilation, hot-surface controls and a venue-approved fire-alarm plan. Name the operator, set stop conditions and arrange a venue trial before guests arrive. Coordinate factory specifications and documents with Cambridge China Bridge.

Specify the machine and its approved fluid together

Ask the manufacturer to identify the exact smoke or haze machine, how it produces the effect and the fluids approved for that model. Put the fluid manufacturer, product name and formulation reference in the order. Request English operating instructions, fluid safety information and an SDS where available. Reject unapproved substitutions, homemade mixtures and added fragrances.

Confirm how you will obtain the approved refill fluid after delivery. Ask for instructions covering storage, cleaning, incompatible fluids and what to do after accidental filling with the wrong product. This guide concerns fluid-based stage machines; refer dry-ice, compressed-gas or burning effects for a separate assessment. Use our certification guide for the wider product document checks.

Assess exposure for the actual show

HSE says an SDS does not replace a COSHH risk assessment. Ask a competent assessor to review the fluid information, the machine's operating process and the proposed cues. Include setup, rehearsals, performances and cleaning, with attention to operators, performers, venue staff and guests. Do not accept 'water-based' or 'non-toxic' as a complete exposure assessment.

Agree where the plume may travel, how long people may be exposed and how to minimise audience exposure. Ask the assessor whether substance-specific air monitoring is needed where exposure remains uncertain. Plan guest warnings and a way to report breathing discomfort. Record who can stop the effect and approve any restart. Our club equipment guide covers shared-use responsibilities.

Agree ventilation and a controlled venue trial

HSE's smoke-effect guidance emphasises thorough pre-planning. Agree the room, machine position, output settings, cue duration and ventilation arrangement with the venue before purchasing. Ask its facilities contact to explain fresh-air supply, extraction and recirculation. Have the assessor judge whether these arrangements suit the planned effect; a fan moving haze around is no demonstration of adequate exposure control.

Arrange a supervised trial before guests arrive, using the approved fluid and proposed operating conditions. Check plume movement, accumulation, exit-sign visibility and slippery deposits. Agree to stop for breathing discomfort, obscured escape routes, unexpected residue or ventilation failure. Reassess changes to fluid, cues, layout or ventilation. A factory demonstration cannot establish suitability for your venue.

Control hot surfaces and give the operator clear tasks

Ask the manufacturer to identify hot parts, the discharge area, required clearances and cooling instructions. Agree a stable position and suitable guarding or barriers to keep guests, children, costumes and decorations away. Obtain model-specific instructions for filling, shutdown and handling after use. Keep access to the controls clear and avoid placing the outlet where people may touch it.

Name a trained operator and agree checks before use, spill cleanup, fault isolation and cool-down before packing. Ask how the machine behaves after power loss, remote-control failure or an empty fluid reservoir. Include safe cable routes and protection against accidental activation in the setup brief. Require written buyer approval before the factory changes heating components, controls or the approved fluid.

Resolve fire-alarm arrangements before committing

Get written approval for the exact effect, room and cues from the venue's fire-safety contact, involving its alarm specialist where needed. Ask them to assess detector response and any links to ventilation, doors or remote monitoring. Do not cover detectors or switch off alarms yourself. For the wider booking approval, use our wedding venue guide.

If an alarm-system change is proposed, ask the venue to document its assessment, authorised personnel, temporary safeguards and restoration checks. Brief the operator on the venue's alarm and evacuation procedure; do not assume an activation is merely the effect. Official assembly guidance for England recommends investigating false alarms and correcting their cause. Hold the purchase until responsibilities and acceptance conditions are settled, and agree a show plan without smoke if approval fails.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any fluid in a Chinese smoke machine?

Use only the fluid approved in writing by the manufacturer for the exact model. Agree refill availability and reject substitutions or added fragrances without a fresh review.

Is water-based haze safe for wedding guests?

The label alone does not settle exposure risk. Assess the fluid, operating process, cues, ventilation and people exposed. Agree controls and stop conditions before using it around guests.

Can I turn off the fire alarm for a smoke machine?

Do not alter the alarm yourself. Ask the venue's fire-safety contact and alarm specialist to agree a documented arrangement. If they cannot approve the effect, use a show plan without smoke.

What should I get from the factory before paying?

Get the exact model specification, approved fluid identity, English instructions, safety information and hot-surface controls. Resolve venue acceptance and agree remedies for unapproved changes before paying.
