Getting started

Buying martial arts and gymnastics mats from China

Choose mats for the club's actual activities, with model-specific impact evidence and agreed checks for joins, surface grip and movement on the venue floor. Obtain the coach's written acceptance and the insurer's conditions before purchase, then inspect the delivered layout before use. Coordinate the factory evidence with Cambridge China Bridge.

Define the activities before choosing a mat

Ask the coach to describe the planned movements: standing practice, throws, grappling, tumbling or apparatus landings. Record users, footwear or bare feet, supervision, landing locations and the floor beneath the mats. Ask the manufacturer to confirm the exact model's intended uses and exclusions. Do not treat a general description such as 'gym mat' as evidence for every activity.

Agree the mat construction, dimensions, thickness, firmness, cover, backing and joining system in the product specification. Include the complete layout and any supporting layers. Ask the coach which sport-specific guidance or equipment criteria they use, and give those documents to the testing specialist before selecting the product.

Check evidence for impact attenuation

Request the complete report for the offered model, not a certificate image or a report for similar foam. Ask a competent testing specialist to identify the applicable activity-specific standard, part and edition, and explain the test methods, results and acceptance criteria. Follow our test report verification guide to check authenticity and product identity.

Match the tested sample's core, cover, thickness, backing and supporting surface to your order. Ask what the results establish about impact attenuation, deformation and bottoming out for the intended activity, and what remains untested. Thickness, foam density, hand pressure and a supplier's demonstration do not replace that assessment. Resolve missing or mismatched evidence before approving the model.

Assess joins and the assembled layout

Request an assembled sample area that includes joins and an outside edge. On the intended supporting floor, check interlocking edges, connector straps or other specified fixings for gaps, raised lips, separation and movement. Ask the coach to assess whether toes or fingers could catch and whether the perimeter creates a trip hazard.

Check fit after dismantling and reassembly, including replacement mats. Record the manufacturer's fitting instructions and permitted arrangement; do not assume mixed models or extra layers are acceptable. Agree rejection conditions for poor joins, uneven surfaces, torn covers and faulty fastenings. Inspect the delivered mats against the approved sample before releasing them for club use.

Check surface grip and slipping underneath

Assess grip at the user's contact surface separately from movement between the backing and venue floor. Ask a testing specialist for methods suited to the intended barefoot or shod activity, likely sweat contamination and cleaning regime. Have the coach consider controlled turning and foot release as well as slipping. A dry showroom trial does not establish performance during training.

HSE warns that people often slip on floors left wet after cleaning. Agree cleaning products and drying arrangements with the manufacturer, and keep the training area closed while wet. Check beneath mats for moisture and dirt. Investigate sliding, curling, cover damage or cleaner residue before reuse; ask for a supported remedy rather than improvising tape or adhesive.

Record coach and insurer acceptance

For club authority, venue permission and the wider insurance questions, use our shared club equipment guide. Add a mat-specific acceptance pack containing the model, activity list, layout, test reports, instructions and inspection plan. Ask the coach to record accepted activities and restrictions. Send the pack to the insurer or broker and obtain written confirmation of cover and any conditions before purchase.

Coach acceptance and insurance confirmation do not substitute for performance evidence. After delivery, verify product identity and installation before a coach-led controlled trial; avoid deliberate falls to prove cushioning. Record defects, use restrictions and who can stop or restart use. Reassess after changes to mats, activities or flooring. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate factory evidence and compare production with the agreed specification.

Frequently asked questions

How thick should martial arts mats be?

Specify the activity and supporting floor first. Ask a testing specialist to assess model-specific impact evidence and the coach to review suitability. Thickness alone does not establish protection.

Can martial arts mats be used for gymnastics?

Do not assume so. Obtain evidence for the planned gymnastics movements and landings, using the complete proposed mat and floor arrangement. Ask the coach to record permitted activities.

How do I check whether mats will slip?

Assess user grip and backing movement separately on the intended floor. Include footwear or bare feet, sweat and cleaning conditions. Agree suitable testing and resolve sliding or curling before use.

Will my club insurer accept mats imported from China?

Ask before ordering. Send the exact model, activities, layout, test evidence and supervision arrangements to the insurer or broker. Obtain written confirmation of cover and conditions; a supplier certificate does not establish acceptance.
