Getting started

Buying a patient hoist and sling from China

Arrange a professional assessment at home before ordering. Specify the assessed hoist and sling combination, confirm individual fit, and secure practical carer training, local servicing and an emergency lowering plan. Cambridge China Bridge can check factory evidence against that agreed specification.

Start with the person and the home

Ask an occupational therapist or competent moving-and-handling professional to assess your relative and the actual transfer locations before choosing equipment. Discuss weight-bearing ability, posture, head support, pain, skin condition and ability to cooperate. Ask whether a full-body hoist or standing aid is appropriate, rather than accepting the factory's recommendation from a photograph.

Have the assessment translated into a written handling plan covering each transfer, the equipment, sling attachments and carers needed. Check access beneath the bed, clearance around chairs, doorways, flooring and storage. Ask the assessor to review the plan when your relative's condition or the equipment changes.

Confirm the exact hoist and sling combination

Request written manufacturer confirmation covering the exact hoist model, spreader bar, sling model and attachment system. Ask the assessor to review it. A matching load rating or a claim that a sling is universal does not establish suitability. Do not improvise connections between loop and clip systems.

Put those model identifiers, permitted attachments and English instructions into the purchase specification, with no substitutions without approval. Check the marked safe working load of every component against the assessed need. Use our medical-device sourcing guide for the wider documentation checks rather than treating a certificate as proof of individual suitability.

Choose sling size through an assessed fitting

Sling sizes and colour codes vary between manufacturers. Ask for the actual dimensions and the manufacturer's fitting method, then arrange an assessed fitting of the proposed model. Do not choose by body weight, clothing size or the label on an existing sling alone.

Ask the assessor to check support, leg sections, openings, head support and the intended lifting position. Record the approved attachment configuration in the handling plan. Discuss whether a toileting sling provides enough support for the proposed task, whether the sling can remain beneath your relative, and how washing and drying will fit daily care.

Arrange practical training before use

Book practical training on the delivered hoist and sling for everyone who will help with transfers. Have the trainer observe each carer applying the sling, securing attachments and completing the planned transfer. A factory video can support familiarisation, but should not be your only preparation.

Ask for a pre-use checklist covering the sling fabric, stitching, attachments, readable labels, hoist condition, controls, battery and charging leads. Agree when to stop using equipment and whom to contact. Keep the handling plan accessible, arrange refresher training when needed, and do not leave your relative suspended unattended.

Secure servicing and support before paying

Find a local competent service provider willing to support the exact imported model before placing the order. Obtain the maintenance instructions, service schedule, replacement-part availability and repair arrangements. Ask separately about servicing and thorough examination, including which examination duties apply if paid carers use the equipment.

Keep serial identifiers, sling identifiers, service records and defect reports together. Agree how care will continue while equipment is unavailable. Give the factory inspection team the approved specification and functional checks; our factory audit guide covers supplier capability, and our balance-payment checklist covers the release decision.

Practise the emergency lowering plan

Before buying, request the exact model's instructions for emergency stopping and lowering. Ask what happens if the battery is flat, the handset fails or power is lost. Have a competent trainer demonstrate the procedure safely on the delivered equipment, following the manufacturer's instructions, before any transfer involving your relative.

Agree where your relative can be lowered safely, how carers will summon help and what to do if lowering fails. Do not assume the emergency stop also lowers the person. Keep the procedure accessible and include emergency functions in the maintenance arrangements. Delay use if carers cannot explain and carry out the agreed response.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a patient hoist before an assessment?

Arrange the home assessment first. It should identify suitable equipment, transfer space, sling support and carers needed, giving you a specification to send to the factory.

Can I use any sling with my patient hoist?

Request written compatibility confirmation for the exact hoist, spreader bar, sling and attachments. Have the assessor review the combination. Matching load ratings alone are insufficient.

How do I choose a patient sling size?

Use the proposed manufacturer's fitting method and an assessed fitting. Check support and lifting position as well as dimensions. Do not rely on clothing size or another brand's size label.

What if the hoist stops during a transfer?

Follow the model-specific emergency procedure taught during practical training. Agree a safe lowering location and a way to summon help beforehand. Do not improvise repairs while your relative is suspended.
