Getting started

Can I use paving from China for a UK driveway?

Yes, provided the exact paving suits the intended use and the installation design resolves drainage, vehicle loading and access. Before paying, get the council's planning and highway position and your installer's written specification. Give the approved purchasing brief to Cambridge China Bridge.

Check the council position before ordering

In England, impermeable front-garden surfacing covering more than 5 square metres generally needs planning permission. Ask the planning authority whether your proposed permeable construction, or drainage to a lawn or border within the property, qualifies as permitted development. Send a measured plan showing the paved area, boundaries, levels and runoff destination rather than just a paving photograph.

Ask about restrictions affecting the property, changes to levels, walls and the proposed entrance. Obtain a written response identifying the drawing assessed and any unresolved applications before committing to the order. For sites in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, ask the relevant council to assess the proposal locally. Keep product documentation checks separate, using our construction materials guide.

Specify the complete drainage system

Treat permeability as a property of the installed system. Government guidance describes permeable paving constructed over a permeable sub-base. Ask the installer to specify the paving, joints, jointing material, bedding and sub-base together. Establish whether water passes through the material, through designed joints, or runs across an impermeable surface to a separate infiltration area.

Have the installer assess soil infiltration, slopes and existing waterlogging, then draw the water route and overflow arrangement. Agree protection for the house, neighbouring land and pavement. A channel drain collects water; its outlet still needs a design. If a sewer connection is proposed, ask who will establish whether it is acceptable and obtain any necessary agreement. Record cleaning, blockage checks and maintenance responsibilities.

Approve vehicle loading before choosing the paving

Tell the installer which vehicles will park, turn or occasionally enter, including vans and delivery vehicles. Ask for written acceptance of the exact paving material, dimensions, thickness and supporting performance evidence for that use. An outdoor patio description or a thickness measurement alone should not be your acceptance criterion for a driveway.

Require a construction detail covering ground preparation, bedding support, sub-base, edge restraints and drainage channels or covers under wheels. Ask how turning loads and vulnerable edges are addressed, and who takes responsibility for the design if you supply imported materials. Use our tiler approval guide for sample, finish and matching checks rather than repeating those checks here.

Resolve road access and unloading separately

A new dropped kerb needs council permission. Resolve that permission separately from the paving purchase and check with the highway authority whether the proposed access also needs planning permission. Ask who may construct the crossing, whether the pavement needs strengthening, and how trees, buried services or street furniture affect the proposal. For an existing crossing, ask whether it suits the intended entrance and vehicle use.

Agree delivery access with the installer and haulier before booking freight. Check the approach road, gate opening, turning space, unloading equipment, pallet weights and storage location against the actual shipment. Do not assume the crossing or finished driveway can carry the delivery lorry. Put responsibility for unloading, temporary protection, damaged pallets and an inaccessible delivery point into the written quotation.

Make payment depend on an agreed brief

Before paying a deposit, assemble the council response, any required approvals, drainage drawing, installer-approved paving specification and delivery plan. Record unresolved matters explicitly. Ask the installer to confirm installation costs and exclusions for buyer-supplied paving, including excavation, drainage, edge restraints and remedial work. Agree who pays if the supplied product misses the specification or the proposed installation proves unsuitable.

Before paying the balance, match the production goods and documents to the approved brief. Set inspection checks using our quality inspection guide, and use our balance payment checklist for the wider payment checks. Give Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China the approved brief and require written approval for substitutions. Agree installation photographs, drainage checks and handover records with the installer.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for paving my front garden?

In England, impermeable front-garden surfacing over 5 square metres generally needs permission. Ask the council to assess the exact drainage proposal, including any permeable construction or runoff to a lawn or border.

Does a drain make my driveway permeable?

A channel drain collects runoff. Ask the installer to show its outlet and explain the complete drainage design. Check permeability through the paving, joints, bedding and sub-base rather than accepting a product label.

Can Chinese patio slabs support a car?

Ask the installer to approve the exact slabs and supporting construction for your vehicles, including turning loads. Obtain relevant performance evidence; a patio description or thickness alone is insufficient for your purchasing decision.

Should I buy paving before getting dropped kerb approval?

Resolve the proposed access before committing to paving. A new dropped kerb needs council permission. Agree the entrance layout, crossing works and delivery access so an access refusal does not leave you with unusable materials.
