Importing from China to Sri Lanka: VAT registration
Start with the Sri Lankan importer's VAT certificate: Customs says importers should hold a valid certificate when registering with Customs. Have your own broker check product approvals before ordering and confirm the final entry. For Chinese factory sourcing, inspections and quotes to your Sri Lankan port, contact Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the importer's VAT certificate
Sri Lanka Customs' registration guidance says that anyone wishing to import or export goods should have a valid VAT certificate. Before paying a factory deposit, ask your own customs broker to check the importing entity's certificate and Customs registration status. Give the broker the proposed seller, Chinese exporter and Sri Lankan importer details.
Agree the purchasing arrangement before asking for shipping prices. Identify who invoices you and who dispatches the goods from China. Our overseas buying guide explains the wider sourcing arrangements; this guide adds the Sri Lankan registration and arrival checks.
Check product approvals before selecting the factory
Customs states that certain items need approval from relevant departments or authorities, depending on the goods. Send your broker the product description, materials, intended use, model details and photographs. Ask for a written decision on applicable import permissions, standards checks, product registration and labels before approving production.
Use the broker's findings to brief the Chinese factory. Ask for matching test reports and proposed packaging artwork, then have your adviser review them before printing. If you also buy for neighbouring markets, consult our India guide and Bangladesh guide, while obtaining a separate Sri Lankan assessment for this order.
Agree the documents supplied from China
We coordinate the commercial invoice with the agreed seller and the packing list with the Chinese factory. If Cambridge China Bridge sells to you, send our draft invoice to your broker and explain the direct shipment from China. Ask the broker to approve the parties, descriptions, values and delivery term before dispatch.
Agree whether a certificate of origin is needed and which form the broker accepts; we coordinate obtaining it in China where agreed. The factory supplies available test reports for review. Match reports to the actual manufacturer, model and materials, and reconcile quantities, weights and package references across the shipment documents.
Separate your port quote from arrival clearance
Give us your named Sri Lankan port and request a written quote showing the delivery term, freight, insurance arrangements and exclusions. Ask your broker to budget local duties, taxes, clearance, port charges and onward transport separately. Our buy-through-a-UK-company service explains the purchasing arrangement.
Customs says import consignments should be declared online through a Customs House Agent, with the entry submitted after arrival and receipt of the shipping agent's delivery order. Appoint your own broker to confirm classification and valuation, lodge the declaration, coordinate supporting documents and examinations, and arrange payment and release as agreed. Your own customs broker confirms the final entry.

Check the supplier and inspect before shipment
Our own staff in China check the supplier's identity, manufacturing site and ability to make the agreed product. We compare the production capability with your specification and approved sample, and investigate differences between the quoted supplier, factory and payment details. Give us the broker's product requirements so they become part of the factory brief.
Before shipment, we inspect against agreed criteria covering materials, dimensions, function, workmanship, quantities, packaging and approved labels. Ask for photographs, recorded defects and a written release decision. Resolve failed checks and missing documents before authorising dispatch, and keep the inspection findings alongside the test reports and broker's approval instructions.
