Importing from China to São Tomé and Príncipe

Start by checking the importer registration exemption: published legislation exempts companies importing listed goods from registration with the trade directorate, while unlisted activities still need licences or permits. Your broker confirms the route and final entry. For sourcing and a quote to your port, contact Cambridge China Bridge.

Check the registration exemption before ordering

The legislation published by the registration and notarial directorate says companies importing goods covered by its specified tables are exempt from registration with the trade directorate. It also says commercial and other activities not listed continue to require licences or permits. Start with the scope of that exemption when asking whether you need importer registration.

Send your own customs broker the product description, intended use and proposed importing entity. Ask them to confirm how the published exemption applies to your activity and what current permissions your particular goods need before you commit to production.

Agree a price to your own port

We are a UK-based sourcing company with our own staff in China. We can source from Chinese factories and quote to your agreed destination port in São Tomé and Príncipe. Give us the product specification, quantity, packing needs and port when requesting a quotation.

Ask the quotation to identify the delivery term, freight, insurance arrangements and any destination charges left for you. Have your broker cost clearance and onward delivery separately. Our overseas buying guide explains the wider service, while buying through a UK company explains the purchasing arrangement.

Prepare the documents with your broker

We coordinate the commercial invoice and packing list with the Chinese factory and the agreed seller. Check that product descriptions, model references, quantities, package details and weights agree across the paperwork. Give your broker drafts showing who sells, who exports and who imports before the documents are finalised.

Ask the broker whether a certificate of origin or particular test reports are needed for your goods. We arrange the agreed certificate of origin and obtain available factory reports, commissioning additional testing where agreed. Match each report to the actual model and specification. This is a preparation checklist, not a claim that every listed document is compulsory for every shipment.

Check the factory and inspect before shipment

Our China staff check the supplier's identity, production location and ability to make the specified goods. We establish whether the supplier manufactures the product or buys it elsewhere, review samples and agree the specification before production. Ask us to record any proposed material or component substitution for your approval.

Before shipment, we inspect against the agreed sample and inspection brief, covering workmanship, dimensions, operation, quantities, packing and approved artwork as appropriate. We report defects and agree corrective action before release. Factory audits and inspections are usually included in the quote; complex checks that need a third party are charged separately and agreed in advance.

Leave the final entry with your local broker

The official trade portal describes a customs broker as a professional who can handle customs clearance processes and the stages involved in delivering goods. Appoint your own broker to confirm the final entry, applicable duties and taxes, supporting documents and arrangements for release and collection. We supply the agreed China-side paperwork and answer factory questions.

For comparison, the guides to Nigeria and Ghana explain their separate import arrangements. Use them to understand why destination checks matter; ask your São Tomé and Príncipe broker to confirm the requirements for your shipment.
