Resolve the import licence before placing the order

Bhutan's Department of Industry states that business units importing machinery, equipment, raw materials and packaging materials from third countries must obtain an import licence from the Department of Trade. For your proposed Chinese purchase, ask your own Bhutan customs broker to confirm the applicable licensing route before you commit.

Send the broker your product description, intended use, importer details and proposed seller. Ask them to identify any product approvals, certification or labelling checks to resolve before production. Our overseas buying guide explains the shared purchasing process; this guide adds the Bhutan licensing check and shipment handover.

Name the seaport or border point for the quote

Bhutan is landlocked. We quote to the seaport or border point you name, with the onward leg agreed separately. Record the precise handover location, delivery term, freight, insurance arrangements and exclusions. Allocate transit handling, border clearance and transport to your premises before comparing quotations.

If the proposed route passes through India, ask your forwarder and broker to explain the arrangements for Bhutan-bound cargo. The India guide covers imports into India. Our Nepal guide offers a useful comparison for agreeing delivery to a landlocked destination.

Agree who supplies each shipment document

We coordinate the commercial invoice and packing list with the Chinese factory and agreed seller. When Cambridge China Bridge sells to you, we provide our commercial invoice; the factory supplies packing details for the shipment. Give your broker drafts showing the seller, importer, goods, quantities, values, weights and package references.

Ask your broker whether a certificate of origin is needed and which form to obtain; we coordinate it in China where agreed. Collect available factory test reports and match their manufacturer, model and specification to the order. Have the broker review the document pack and identify missing transport or supporting documents before dispatch.

Check the supplier and inspect before shipment

Our own staff in China check the supplier's identity, manufacturing site and ability to make the agreed product. Compare the quotation, sample, production arrangements and payment beneficiary. Investigate unexplained changes before authorising production or further payment. The buy-through-a-UK-company service explains the purchasing arrangement.

Agree inspection criteria for materials, dimensions, function, workmanship, quantities, packaging and approved labels. We inspect against the written specification and approved sample, record findings and coordinate corrections before shipment release. Keep inspection photographs and reports alongside the factory's test evidence, with unresolved issues clearly recorded.

Give your own broker a checked arrival file

Bhutan's customs portal requests traders to submit declarations through a clearing and forwarding agent. Appoint your own Bhutan customs broker early and agree their arrival work: classification and valuation checks, declaration submission, supporting documents, customs queries, examination coordination and release. Your own customs broker confirms the final entry.

The customs rules allow the Department to reject a declaration when required documents and information are missing. Send the checked file before dispatch and identify who will answer further questions. Ask your broker to budget duties, taxes, clearance, local handling and onward delivery separately from our quoted scope.
