Buying electric blankets from China: safety checks

Before ordering, match the blanket, controller, connector and UK plug to the test evidence. Check overheating cut-off protection and whether the instructions permit sleeping use. A timer or marketplace badge is insufficient evidence. Cambridge China Bridge can help check the factory and production combination.

Identify the exact combination being supplied

Save the marketplace listing and selected variant, then ask for photographs of the blanket label, controller label, connector and fitted plug. Record the manufacturer, model, size, electrical rating and controller version in your purchase specification. Ask who actually makes the goods and who handles faults. Similar photographs, reviews or a shared listing do not establish that every variant uses the same components.

Ask for a complete test report identifying that blanket and controller combination, including photographs and any covered variants. Match it against a physical sample and confirm its scope with the issuing laboratory. Do not accept a replacement controller merely because its connector fits. Our electrical import guide covers the wider compliance documents and UK plug requirements.

Check overheating protection beyond the timer

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service advises checking for a mechanism that cuts power when overheating begins. Ask the supplier to identify the protective device, what triggers it and which report pages show its operation. Treat temperature adjustment, timed switch-off and overheating protection as separate checks.

Ask a competent laboratory to review abnormal-operation results for the supplied combination, including relevant overheating and control-failure tests. A demonstration of normal warming cannot establish fault protection. Do not deliberately fold, cover or damage an energised sample to test it yourself. Agree that changes to the controller, heating wire or protective components need review before production continues.

Confirm whether sleeping use is permitted

Ask whether the product is an underblanket, an overblanket or a throw intended for use while awake. Obtain the English instructions before ordering and check permitted positioning, controller placement, washing and user restrictions. Do not infer suitability for sleeping from a bed photograph, a timer or an overheating-protection claim.

Home Office advice for England says to unplug blankets before getting into bed unless they have thermostat control for safe all-night use. For an overnight-use claim, require explicit permission in the exact model's instructions and ask the laboratory whether the evidence covers that use. If the listing and manual disagree, pause the order until the supplier resolves the discrepancy.

Carry fire-service advice into customer instructions

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service advises against using a hot water bottle or drinking fluids in bed when using an electric blanket. London Fire Brigade advises storing electric blankets flat, rolled up or loosely folded to protect internal wiring. Check that the supplied instructions explain compatible use and storage clearly.

As a receiving check, reject samples with exposed wires, damaged leads, loose connectors or scorch marks. Stop a normal-use check if there is an unusual smell, buzzing or local overheating, and refer the product for competent assessment. Record defects with photographs of the product and controller labels so the supplier can identify the affected combination.

Make batch acceptance depend on matching evidence

Keep an approved physical sample, its controller, the report, label photographs and agreed manual together. Specify no component substitutions without approval. At pre-shipment inspection, compare production units with that record and check supplied controllers, connectors, plugs, labels and instructions. Fabric and washing checks are covered in our blankets and throws guide.

Search official UK product recalls using the brand, blanket model and controller identifiers before ordering and again before release. Keep unresolved safety or identity discrepancies out of saleable stock. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can help compare factory samples and production goods; specialist safety evidence should be reviewed by a competent laboratory.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CE mark enough for an electric blanket?

No. Match the complete test report, conformity documents, labels and English instructions to the supplied blanket and controller. A mark or marketplace badge does not establish that match.

Can I sleep with a heated throw switched on?

Do not assume so. Check the exact model's instructions. Home Office advice says to unplug before bed unless the blanket has thermostat control for safe all-night use.

Does automatic switch-off prove overheating protection?

No. Ask separately how overheating cuts power and where the test report demonstrates it. A timer demonstration only shows timed switching.

Can I fit a different electric blanket controller?

Do not choose by connector fit alone. Obtain manufacturer confirmation and evidence covering the exact replacement combination before accepting it.
