Getting started

Buying a ceiling fan from China: UK home checks

Before ordering, have your installer assess the exact fan, ceiling structure, blade clearances, mounting kit and electrical controls. Obtain model-specific instructions and written acceptance, including any reinforcement or wiring changes. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to gather the factory documents for that review.

Confirm what will support the moving fan

Send your installer the assembled fan's weight, mounting drawings and photographs of the proposed ceiling position. Ask them to identify the supporting structure and assess the loads from operation, including vibration. Do not assume an existing light fitting's fixing point can support a fan, or approve fixings into plasterboard alone without a suitable support design.

Ask who will inspect concealed support and arrange any reinforcement. Have the installer specify fixings for the actual ceiling construction and check whether the supplied bracket is suitable. Record the accepted support and fixing arrangement in your product specification before ordering.

Measure the complete blade sweep

Obtain the exact model's blade diameter, assembled drop and manufacturer's minimum clearances. Measure from the finished floor to the blades and from blade tips to walls, beams and other obstructions. Include doors, cupboard doors and windows when open. Check the whole rotating area, rather than measuring only beneath the motor.

For a sloping ceiling, ask for the permitted slope and compatible mounting arrangement. Confirm which suspension rod achieves the required clearances without creating a reach hazard near raised beds or platforms. If the instructions omit clearance information, request it before buying. Do not substitute a distance taken from another model's listing.

Review the mounting instructions and supplied parts

For electrical equipment supplied on the Great Britain market, manufacturers must provide clear, legible instructions in easily understandable English. Request the exact fan's manual before payment. Have your installer check the assembly sequence, bracket attachment, suspension connection, locking parts, blade fasteners and any secondary restraint specified by the manufacturer.

Reconcile the manual's parts list with photographs of the kit that will ship. Ask for tightening instructions, cable routing through the suspension, and access to the receiver and connections. Resolve missing diagrams or incompatible components with the factory before purchase. Product compliance documents are covered separately in our electrical imports guide.

Check the fan, light and controls together

Give the electrician rating-label photographs and wiring diagrams for the motor, receiver and any integrated light or driver. Ask them to compare input voltage and frequency with your home's supply, assess earthing and circuit protection, and confirm the available conductors. Check whether the fan and light need separate switching or a permanent supply for remote control.

Ask whether existing wall controls are compatible with this motor and receiver. Do not assume a lighting dimmer can control fan speed. Confirm how isolation, remote pairing and operation after a power interruption will work. Our electrician checks for imported lighting cover the broader installation and building-control questions.

Get written acceptance before committing

Ask the installer to record whether they accept the exact model for the proposed position, accept it subject to specified changes, or need further evidence. Agree responsibility for structural work, electrical installation and completion paperwork. Hold the order if support, clearances or instructions remain unresolved. A supplier's assurance that the fan suits UK homes does not settle those site-specific questions.

For a sample installation, have the installer check starting, speed changes, vibration, unusual noise, blade clearance and any light controls before handover. Record the accepted motor, blades, suspension, receiver and manual, and control substitutions using our sample-to-production guide. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can gather factory information; the UK installer assesses the home installation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hang a ceiling fan where my light is?

Ask your installer to inspect the supporting structure and assess the fan's operating loads. The existing light fixing and wiring may need changes.

How much clearance does a ceiling fan need?

Use the exact model's mounting instructions and have the installer check floor height and the full blade sweep against nearby obstructions. Request missing clearance information before ordering.

Will a Chinese ceiling fan work with my dimmer?

Ask the electrician to check the exact motor, receiver and wall control. Do not assume a lighting dimmer is suitable for fan speed control.

What if my electrician refuses to fit the fan?

Ask for the specific reason and required evidence or changes. Resolve those with the factory before buying. If already delivered, keep it uninstalled while agreeing the next step.
