Getting started

Can I buy a smart door lock from China for my home?

Yes, but order only after a UK locksmith has checked your door, escape from inside and mechanical entry when power fails, and your insurer has confirmed acceptance of the proposed installation. Match those checks to the exact lock model before paying. For sourcing and checks in China, contact Cambridge China Bridge.

Ask a UK locksmith to assess the actual door

Send the locksmith photographs of the door, frame, existing lock and door edge, together with the supplier's dimensioned drawings and installation instructions. Ask them to measure door thickness, lock position, cylinder dimensions, handle clearance and opening direction. For a multipoint mechanism, confirm how the proposed lock operates the existing locking points.

Ask whether the proposal replaces the lock case, changes the cylinder or simply turns the existing mechanism. Get written confirmation of the exact configuration they can fit and maintain. If the door is fire resisting, involve a specialist in fire doors; for rented homes or flats, also ask the landlord or managing agent about permission before planning alterations.

Separate emergency escape from outside entry

Ask the locksmith to demonstrate how everyone in the household would open the door from inside when the lock is fully secured. Specify an escape method that does not depend on a phone, app, network connection, battery or finding a key. Include any separate deadlock and automatic locking setting in the assessment.

Have the locksmith check the proposed operation with the lock's batteries removed and any external power disconnected, following the manufacturer's instructions. Ask what happens if the motor or electronics fail. Agree a safe test procedure with the door open before testing the completed installation. Reject a model if its escape operation remains unclear.

Verify mechanical access without power

For entry from outside, specify a mechanical key override and ask whether it operates the locking mechanism directly without electricity. An emergency charging socket still depends on working electronics. Have the locksmith assess the cylinder, key access cover and whether a key can operate when another key is left inside.

Request a demonstration on the exact model with its batteries removed. Separately check what works when home electricity, internet access, the phone or the supplier's remote service is unavailable. Agree where a spare key will be kept securely outside the locked home, how replacements are obtained and who can repair the lock locally.

Get your insurer's answer before ordering

Send your insurer the exact model, proposed cylinder, existing locking arrangement and locksmith's installation plan. Ask which security conditions in your policy apply, what certification or evidence they want, and whether replacing any existing lock changes their acceptance. Ask about automatic locking and the way the door must be secured when the home is empty.

Keep the written response with your policy documents and order specification. A supplier's claim that a lock is suitable for UK homes does not establish your insurer's acceptance. If the insurer requests certification, have the locksmith check that it covers the proposed hardware and installation rather than a different product.

Turn the checks into a supplier specification

Record the approved model, drawings, mechanical override, internal release, cylinder, batteries, accessories and English instructions. Ask about app availability in the UK, account setup, security updates and operation without the supplier's remote service. UK product security regulations cover relevant consumer products that can connect to the internet or a network. Use our connectable-product security guide for the documentation checks.

Approve a sample against the locksmith's specification before committing to the purchase. Agree checks on the actual goods using our inspection guide, then follow our before-payment guide. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can check the supplied configuration against your brief; the UK locksmith assesses installation suitability and the insurer confirms policy acceptance.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Chinese smart lock fit my UK front door?

Do not assume it will. Ask a UK locksmith to compare the exact drawings with your door, cylinder, lock case and any multipoint mechanism before ordering.

Can I open a smart lock when its battery dies?

Check inside escape and outside entry separately. Ask for a mechanical key override that works without electricity and have the locksmith demonstrate the exact model with its batteries removed.

Will my home insurer accept an imported smart lock?

Ask your insurer before buying. Provide the exact model, cylinder and installation plan, and obtain written confirmation of acceptance and any security conditions.

Can I fit a smart lock to a flat entrance fire door?

Have a specialist in fire doors assess the proposed hardware and alterations. Ask the landlord or managing agent about permission, and resolve escape and installation suitability before ordering.
