Getting started

Buying a home water filter or softener from China

Start with your water supplier’s report and the problem you want to solve. Check evidence for each removal claim, the supply of replacement consumables, cleaning instructions and your installer’s fitting checks before ordering. Supplier checks in China can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Establish whether treatment is needed

Ask your water supplier for the report covering your address and advice on any taste, colour or hardness concern. For an ordinary public supply, do not assume additional treatment is needed for health protection. Investigate a sudden change with the supplier or a plumber before choosing equipment. For a private supply, arrange an assessment and suitable testing rather than selecting treatment from a sales demonstration.

Separate your objectives: improving taste, reducing scale and addressing an identified contaminant require different evidence. An ion-exchange softener can add sodium; plan an unsoftened kitchen supply for drinking and cooking. Put your source water, intended drinking-water outlet, available pressure, space and drainage into a product specification.

Match each removal claim to test evidence

Ask the supplier to name each contaminant it claims to reduce and provide results for the complete device with the supplied cartridge or membrane. Check incoming and treated concentrations, water chemistry, flow, pressure and the volume treated before performance declines. Ask whether the claimed performance was demonstrated throughout the stated replacement interval, rather than only with a fresh cartridge.

A taste improvement, hardness reading or dissolved-solids meter does not demonstrate removal of a named pesticide, lead or bacteria. Ask the laboratory whether its method and test conditions answer your actual concern. Use our test-report verification guide for authenticity and model coverage. Assess water-contact material evidence separately from contaminant-removal performance.

Secure replacement consumables before ordering

Obtain exact references for cartridges, membranes, resin, seals and any lamps. Ask for dimensions, connections, compatible alternatives, storage instructions and replacement triggers based on time, use and source-water conditions. Try a replacement consumable in the sample unit; a similar-looking cartridge may have different seals or treatment media.

Ask who will supply replacements locally and what happens if the factory changes or discontinues the model. Include consumables, servicing, salt where applicable, electricity and discharged water when comparing ownership costs. For reverse osmosis, request measured treated-water output and waste-water discharge under conditions matching your home. Do not buy until you have a workable replenishment plan.

Check whether you can maintain hygiene

Obtain instructions for commissioning, flushing, cartridge changes, cleaning and sanitising housings and storage tanks. Ask for the permitted cleaning products, procedure and signs that require stopping use. Poor maintenance can allow bacterial growth or material previously removed to return to the water; a cartridge-change reminder alone is insufficient.

Ask for the procedure after the home has been unoccupied, including flushing or sanitising before drinking. For a softener, establish the salt specification, replenishment and regeneration or backwashing instructions. Check that you can isolate the unit, reach service parts and obtain help locally. Keep a maintenance record and avoid extending consumable life by guesswork.

Get the installation checked locally

In England and Wales, water fittings must meet applicable water-fitting requirements and be installed in a workmanlike manner. Send the exact model’s evidence and proposed pipework layout to your installer and water company before ordering. Ask whether the work requires advance notification and consent, especially for reverse osmosis or treatment using water for regeneration or cleaning.

Have the installer check pressure, connections, isolation, backflow protection, drainage and the drinking-water outlet. For Scotland or Northern Ireland, ask the local water supplier and installer to identify the applicable fitting requirements. Our taps and valves guide covers related fittings. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can coordinate model, consumable and document checks against your agreed brief.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a filter for my tap water?

Start with your water supplier’s report and advice. Separate a taste or scale preference from an identified water-quality problem. Investigate sudden changes before buying treatment.

Does a softener make water safe to drink?

Do not treat hardness reduction as evidence of contaminant removal.

How do I check a filter’s removal claims?

Request results for each named contaminant on the complete device and supplied consumable. Check test conditions and performance through the claimed service life, then verify the report with its laboratory.

What should I check before importing a home filter?

Confirm replacement consumables, cleaning procedures and local servicing. Send the model evidence and installation layout to your installer and water supplier before ordering.
