Buying a saddle from China for my own horse
Yes, if a supplier will sell an individual saddle. Before paying, have a qualified UK saddle fitter assess the proposed model, adjustment options and trial plan. Final fit approval needs the actual saddle on your horse with you riding, so agree returns first. Supplier checks in China can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with a fitter willing to assess this saddle
Find a qualified UK saddle fitter before choosing a factory model. Check their qualification, relevant experience and willingness to assess and adjust a saddle bought elsewhere. Give them your riding discipline, horse’s history, current saddle problems and the supplier’s model details. Ask what they can provisionally approve before ordering and what must wait for an appointment with the actual saddle.
A photograph, back tracing or catalogue seat size cannot establish final fit. Ask the fitter to prepare the measurements and photographs the supplier needs, with clear measurement points. Our guide to buying an individual factory item covers availability; this guide addresses whether the saddle is a workable purchase for your horse and you.
Approve horse and rider fit together
Ask the fitter to assess tree shape and width, panel shape and contact, usable bearing length, wither and spinal clearance, shoulder freedom, balance and stability. Agree the saddle pad and girth to use during assessment. The fitter should inspect the delivered saddle’s condition and construction before deciding whether a ridden assessment is appropriate.
For the rider, ask about seat shape and space, flap position, knee support, stirrup position and balance for your intended work. Have the fitter observe you riding in the actual saddle, using appropriate movements they select. Record any slipping, rocking, pressure concerns or restricted movement. Ask them to record approval, required adjustments or rejection, rather than accepting a general statement that the saddle fits.
Define what adjustable actually means
Ask the supplier to identify the adjustment system, compatible parts, panel filling and manufacturer’s adjustment instructions. Have the fitter confirm what can be changed, what cannot, and whether they have the tools and experience to do the work. A changeable front gullet does not establish that the tree shape, saddle length or panels suit your horse.
Confirm replacement-part availability, who supplies them, adjustment costs and any effect on the seller’s warranty or return offer. Ask the fitter when to reassess fit as the horse’s shape or workload changes. Put the approved model, tree, panels and adjustment system in a written product specification, and require approval before substitutions.
Agree a ridden trial and a usable return route
Book the fitter and agree a trial window that starts on delivery and allows their assessment. Obtain written permission for riding, girthing, using stirrups and any proposed adjustment. Specify acceptable trial marks, cleaning, retained packaging, the return address, transport costs, transit damage arrangements, deductions and refund timing. Agree what happens if the fitter rejects the saddle or an adjustment fails.
For a UK consumer purchase, GOV.UK describes permitted handling as the same handling allowed in a shop. Do not assume this covers a ridden trial or reflocking. Ask the seller to confirm those permissions explicitly, especially for a bespoke order. Identify who is selling the saddle and who handles a return. Our personal-purchase returns guide covers the return journey.

Use the approvals as your payment checklist
Before paying, hold the fitter’s provisional model assessment, the agreed specification, the adjustment plan and the seller’s written trial-and-return offer. Compare the complete delivered cost, fitting visits, possible adjustments and return transport with a locally available saddle that can be tried. If a meaningful trial or affordable return is unavailable, consider buying locally.
Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can obtain model information, confirm the agreed construction and check the actual item against the purchase brief. These checks cannot approve fit on your horse. Keep supplier inspection and UK fitting decisions separate, and arrange final horse-and-rider approval before accepting the saddle for continued use.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy a saddle from China for my own horse?
Possibly, if the supplier sells individual saddles. Involve a qualified UK fitter before ordering and secure a ridden trial with workable returns before paying.
Can a saddle fitter approve fit from photos?
Photos and fitter-prepared measurements can help shortlist a model. Final approval needs assessment of the actual saddle on your horse, including you riding when the fitter considers it appropriate.
Will an adjustable saddle fit any horse?
Do not assume it will. Ask your fitter which features can change and whether the tree shape, panels and bearing length suit your horse. Confirm compatible parts and local adjustment support.
Can I return a saddle after riding in it?
Secure written ridden-trial permission before paying. Agree acceptable marks, adjustments, rejection by your fitter, return costs and refund terms. Do not assume a general returns offer covers riding.
