Horse saddles: 2% across both tariff lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 17 October 2026, heading 4201 covers saddlery and harness for animals, of any material. Hand-made leather riding saddles fall under 4201 00 00 10; other saddles fall under 4201 00 00 90. Both lines carry 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures or suspensions listed. The table separates saddle variants sharing these codes.

Both lines attach cat-and-dog-fur import and export controls and seal-product import controls. Imports and exports of cat or dog fur, including products made from it, are banned. Seal products imported into Great Britain for trade must have a seal catch certificate. If a supplier proposes seal material, ask your customs broker to confirm eligibility before ordering from China. Specify the animal species for all leather and fur components.

Confirm the manufacturing method and materials with your broker using our commodity code guide. For saddle pads and related textiles within the wider heading, see horse rugs and equestrian textiles.

Specify the tree, panels and girth straps

Define the intended riding discipline, seat measurement method, tree material and shape, head width, gullet clearance, panel profile and filling. Agree tolerances against drawings and an approved sample. A supplier's width label alone does not establish fit. Have a saddle fitter assess samples on the intended horse types before approving production.

Specify leather species, thickness, finish and colour, or the exact synthetic covering. Record girth-strap material, attachment and stitching, stirrup-bar construction, hardware finish and panel symmetry. Agree load and fatigue checks with a suitable laboratory through testing and certification.

Saddles supplied to consumers in Great Britain must be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Include fitting and care instructions, and assess risks from tree failure, strap detachment and faulty stirrup bars.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small batch of synthetic riding saddles under 4201 00 00 90, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £700 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,700. Duty at 2% is £194. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,894, so it is £1,978.80. Import taxes total £2,172.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £194 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Tree and fit: compare the tree shape, seat, gullet and panel measurements with the approved specification; check for twist, cracks and uneven panels.

Load-bearing parts: inspect girth-strap attachments, stitching and stirrup bars; review the agreed strength-test results and check for sharp hardware.

Covering and finish: verify material records, inspect leather for cracks and loose grain, and check synthetic seams, colour transfer and exposed edges.

Arrival condition: check for dampness, mould, crushed panels and damaged hardware; match model and batch records to cartons. Use quality inspection to plan checks before shipment.

What goes wrong

A saddle can resemble the approved sample while its tree shape or panel filling differs. Uneven panels, a twisted tree or a narrowed gullet can change fit. Weak girth-strap attachments and loose stirrup bars are more serious than cosmetic stitching faults. Check construction beneath the covering on development samples.

Leather can crack or transfer dye, synthetic coverings can split at seams, and damp packing can cause mould. Record defects against the agreed specification, isolate affected saddles and obtain a corrective-action proposal before accepting replacements. Recheck fit and construction whenever the factory changes materials or the tree supplier.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on horse saddles from China?

Both saddle lines carry 2% duty in the supplied tariff reading. No anti-dumping or countervailing measures or suspensions are listed. Import VAT is separate.

Do hand-made leather saddles have a different commodity code?

Yes. Hand-made leather riding saddles use 4201 00 00 10; other saddles use 4201 00 00 90. Both carry 2% duty. Confirm materials and manufacturing method before declaring the goods.

How do I check a Chinese saddle fits?

Agree tree and panel measurements, then have a saddle fitter assess the sample on the intended horse types. Compare production saddles with the approved specification rather than relying on a width label.

What should I test before ordering horse saddles?

Agree checks for tree strength, girth-strap attachments, stirrup bars, stitching and colour transfer. Use production materials for samples and repeat the agreed checks on bulk goods.
