Buying a PLB or EPIRB from China for UK use
Before buying, confirm the exact model and serial number with the manufacturer, obtain evidence of UK coding, and check that a UK service agent supports the battery and seals. Register the beacon with the MCA and follow its model-specific self-test instructions. Factory evidence checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Match the beacon to the intended use
Tell the supplier whether the beacon will be carried by a walker, worn by a crew member or mounted on a boat. Ask the manufacturer to confirm suitability for that use, including activation, antenna deployment, flotation and mounting. Specify a satellite distress beacon rather than accepting a tracking device described loosely as a locator.
For boating, ask a marine equipment specialist whether your vessel and operation need a particular beacon or installation. Do not assume a wearable device replaces a vessel-mounted beacon. If you are also importing the boat, use our personal boat import guide for the separate craft assessment.
Verify the actual model and supplied units
Obtain photographs of the actual model label, serial number, beacon identifier, battery expiry label and packaging. Contact the named manufacturer through independently found contact details. Ask it to confirm authenticity, the seller’s relationship to the brand, the model variant and whether the serial number is supported for servicing.
Request the claimed Cospas-Sarsat type-approval reference and have it checked against the exact manufacturer and model. Match the supplied variant to its declaration, manual and supporting reports. Our declaration checking guide and test report verification guide explain document checks. Resolve mismatched names, identifiers or configurations before payment.
Confirm UK coding and register with the MCA
Put UK coding in the purchase specification. Ask for a programming record identifying the actual beacon, its country coding, protocol and transmitted identifier. Have the manufacturer or UK Beacon Registry confirm the programming is suitable before shipment. MCA guidance identifies the Registry and manufacturer as sources of programming advice. A label saying ‘UK version’ is insufficient purchasing evidence.
Register your beacon with the MCA’s UK Beacon Registry and keep the registration up to date. Registration is free. Prepare the beacon identifier, manufacturer, model, serial number, emergency contact and relevant vessel information. Compare the registration confirmation with the delivered unit. For hiking, brief your emergency contact on your route; for boating, include the vessel and intended voyage.
Secure battery servicing before you order
Ask a manufacturer-approved UK service agent whether it will accept the exact model and supplied serial number. Obtain written details of battery replacement, seals, waterproof checks, coding checks and service records. Ask what happens after emergency activation or a failed self-test. Avoid committing to a model whose servicing route remains unresolved.
Check the battery expiry label on the reserved stock and ask for storage and previous servicing records, especially for older or returned units. Agree the acceptable remaining service life in writing. For a float-free installation, also check the release mechanism and its expiry label. Require service records for replacement batteries rather than relying on a seller’s claim that they are new.

Agree safe self-tests and a release checklist
Obtain the exact model’s user manual before ordering. For routine checks, use its designated self-test procedure and observe its instructions on frequency, duration and any separate navigation-receiver test. Ask the manufacturer to clarify unclear instructions. Do not accept an outdoor distress activation as a factory demonstration or copy a test sequence from another model.
MCA maintenance guidance says an EPIRB procedure involving possible transmission should use a radio-frequency-screened room or enclosure. Leave transmission testing to the service specialist. Before release, collect matching unit photographs, coding evidence, service acceptance and permitted self-test results. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can coordinate these factory checks; agree the technical test method with the manufacturer or service agent.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check whether a China-supplied PLB is genuine?
Send the actual model and serial-number photographs to the manufacturer using independently found contact details. Ask it to confirm authenticity and service support, then reconcile the approval reference and documents.
Can I register a beacon advertised as a UK version?
Have the manufacturer or UK Beacon Registry confirm the actual programming first. Obtain a coding record and compare its beacon identifier with the delivered unit and registration confirmation.
Can I replace the beacon battery myself?
Ask the manufacturer or its approved service agent for the exact model’s procedure. Establish who will replace the battery, renew seals, check waterproof integrity and provide service records before buying.
Can I switch on an EPIRB to test it?
Use the model’s designated self-test procedure for routine checks. Do not activate a distress transmission as a demonstration. Arrange specialist transmission tests with suitable screened facilities.
