Can I buy a hot-water cylinder from China?
Yes, but get your installer to accept the exact cylinder and proposed installation before ordering. Agree the vented or unvented design, safety controls, discharge route and heating compatibility, then confirm the building-control route for your UK location. Supplier checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Get your installer to accept the design first
Send your installer the cylinder drawings, installation instructions, safety-device list and details of your existing system before paying a deposit. Ask for written acceptance of the proposed model and a list of unresolved checks. A supplier saying it exports to the UK does not establish that your installer will fit this cylinder.
Ask the installer to specify vented or unvented construction. For a vented proposal, have them review the feed cistern, open vent and available height. For an unvented proposal, have them review incoming pressure and flow, expansion provision and relief arrangements. Distinguish a domestic hot-water cylinder from a heating buffer or thermal store. Record the agreed design in your product specification.
Approve the complete safety-control package
England’s hot-water safety guidance calls for independent safety devices on unvented storage systems. Ask your installer to identify the operating thermostat, overheat cut-out, relief valves and expansion provision on the actual drawing. Have them explain how the heat supply stops if the operating control fails, including every connected heat source.
Request the exact component references, settings, wiring diagrams and replacement parts. Ask which controls arrive fitted and which are supplied loose. Do not approve substitutions without your installer’s review. Check that supporting reports cover the ordered cylinder and supplied controls using our test-report verification guide.
Draw the discharge route before buying
Have the installer draw the relief discharge route from the cylinder to its final outlet, including the tundish, where applicable. Ask them to check visibility, pipe material, sizing, bends, fall and protection for people near the outlet. Confirm that the proposed cupboard and surrounding building allow the route to be installed and maintained.
Do not assume a nearby waste pipe is suitable. If connection to a soil stack is proposed, ask the installer to document why the complete arrangement is suitable for hot relief discharge. Resolve access, shared drainage and any alterations before ordering. A cylinder that fits the cupboard can still leave you with an impractical discharge route.
Check heating, water and servicing compatibility
For a boiler or heat pump, ask for coil performance at your system’s intended operating conditions, rather than accepting a generic compatibility claim. Review recovery performance, hot-water demand, connections, sensor pockets, immersion-heater supply and control wiring. Check dimensions, delivery access, filled weight, support and space for servicing.
Ask your installer to review water-contact materials and the factory’s stated limits for water chemistry and treatment. If you use a softener, refer to our home water-treatment guide. Obtain maintenance instructions and a local replacement-parts plan. Include installation changes, servicing and replacement controls when comparing the imported cylinder with a locally supplied alternative.

Confirm the route for your UK location
For England or Wales, ask your installer whether the work is covered by their competent person scheme registration or needs a building-control application. A scheme-registered installer can self-certify work within the scheme’s scope. Check current membership and coverage for this installation; do not treat a training certificate as proof of scheme registration.
Scotland and Northern Ireland have different rules. In Scotland, ask your council’s building standards team whether the proposal needs a building warrant and what completion evidence to retain. In Northern Ireland, ask council building control about the application and inspection route. For Wales, confirm the applicable Welsh guidance. Give the relevant team your address, building type, cylinder documents and proposed layout before committing.
Agree who handles notifications or applications, commissioning and completion documents before work starts. Keep the installer’s acceptance, approved component list, final instructions and commissioning record together. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can coordinate factory documents and check the supplied cylinder against that agreed brief.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import a hot-water cylinder for my house?
Yes, but first get your installer to accept the exact model, controls and installation layout. Confirm the local approval route and replacement-parts plan before ordering.
Should I buy a vented or unvented cylinder?
Ask your installer to choose against your existing system, water supply and available space. Have them review the feed and vent arrangement or the expansion and relief package before you buy.
Can I connect cylinder discharge to a waste pipe?
Do not assume so. Ask your installer to assess the complete discharge route, including pipe suitability, visibility and the final outlet. Resolve the layout before ordering.
Will a cylinder from China work with my heat pump?
Ask for coil performance at your heat pump’s intended operating conditions. Have your installer check recovery performance, sensors, controls and backup heating against the exact model.
