Buying a hot tub from China: garden checks
Before ordering, get the exact model's installation manual and have your electrician, plumber and base installer review it against your garden. Confirm power, filling and drainage, occupied weight, access and maintenance arrangements. For factory-side checks, speak to Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the exact model before committing
Request the English installation and operating manuals, rating-plate photograph, dimensioned drawings and equipment list before paying a deposit. Match the quoted tub to its heater, pumps, controller and supplied accessories. Ask the factory to resolve conflicting ratings or instructions in writing. Our electrical import guide covers the wider product compliance checks.
Send this pack, garden photographs and the proposed location to your installers. Ask each to confirm feasibility, preparation work and exclusions before you order. Record who supplies the base, wiring, plumbing, steps, cover and commissioning, and who handles a fault after arrival. For a garden pool project, see our pool kit approvals and checks.
Have the electrical supply assessed
Ask an electrician experienced with outdoor hot tubs to review the model's voltage, frequency, maximum electrical demand and connection method. Have them assess the existing supply, cable route, earthing and bonding, residual-current protection, isolation and equipment locations. Ask whether the heater and pumps can run together. Do not choose a cable, protective device or extension lead from a supplier's generic recommendation.
England's Approved Document P explains electrical work notification, design, installation, inspection and testing. Ask your electrician to establish the applicable notification and certification route before work starts, and agree which installation records you will receive. For a site elsewhere in the UK, ask the installer to check the local approval route.
Plan filling, connections and emptying
Confirm whether the tub is filled manually or needs a permanent water connection. Obtain inlet and drain drawings, fitting details and any specified pressure or water-quality limits. Ask a plumber to assess the intended filling arrangement and backflow protection, including how to keep tub water from returning into the drinking-water supply.
Agree where drained water will go before installing the base. Ask your drainage provider about an appropriate disposal route for treated water. Check drain access, hose routing, isolation valves, leak access and winter emptying. Avoid a layout that sends discharged water towards electrical equipment, foundations or neighbouring land.
Check supporting loads and safe access
Request the empty weight, water capacity, permitted occupancy, support footprint and base specification. Have the base designer assess the combined load of the tub, water, occupants and accessories, including how the load reaches the ground. For decking or a raised platform, obtain a structural assessment before buying. A deck that supports garden furniture is insufficient evidence for a filled hot tub.
Measure the delivery route using the packed dimensions and handling instructions. Check gates, corners, overhead obstructions and lifting access. Plan stable steps, handholds, slip-resistant surfaces, lighting and child access control. Allow room to move the cover and remove service panels without dismantling the surrounding deck. Ask for the model's suction-fitting and entrapment warnings.

Make the manual and handover part of acceptance
Require instructions for the supplied configuration: filling, pump priming, initial start-up, controls, temperature limits, safe use, fault shutdown and restarting. Also request the water-treatment method, compatible chemicals, testing routine, filter cleaning, water replacement, frost protection and winter storage. Have a local service provider review whether the maintenance plan is workable. Our supplier instructions guide helps turn factory material into usable customer documentation.
Agree a witnessed commissioning and handover after installation, including leak checks, controls and safe shutdown. Have the factory demonstrate the instructions on the actual configuration before shipment, following our assembly and use instructions guide. Obtain spare-part identifiers and a repair contact. Hold acceptance if the manual describes different equipment or leaves operating limits unresolved.
Frequently asked questions
Can I plug a Chinese hot tub into my garden socket?
Have an electrician check the exact model's demand, connection instructions and your existing installation before ordering. A plug photograph does not establish that the socket or circuit is suitable.
Does a hot tub need permanent plumbing?
Ask whether the model uses manual filling or a permanent inlet. Confirm fittings, backflow protection and an appropriate drainage route with your plumber before preparing the site.
Can I put an imported hot tub on decking?
Obtain the filled and occupied load and support layout, then have the deck assessed structurally. Include the tub, water, users and accessories rather than relying on the empty shipping weight.
What manual should I request before buying?
Request English installation, operating and maintenance instructions for the exact heater, pumps and controller supplied, including water treatment, frost protection, fault shutdown and spare parts.
