Getting started

Can I buy weedkiller from China for my garden?

Only if the exact product meets the rules for your UK destination and intended garden use. Plant protection products need authorisation, and amateur users must follow the label. Confirm the import route before ordering. Supplier document checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the intended use

Tell the supplier what you want to treat: weeds on a path, insects attacking plants, ants around a patio or rodents. Ask for photographs of the complete container label, the product name, active substances, concentrations, formulation and claimed UK authorisation or approval number.

Plant protection products must be authorised before they can be used, sold, supplied or stored. Buying for your own garden does not remove that requirement. Our CE, UKCA and ISO guide explains general certification documents; use the product-specific checks here for garden chemicals.

Check the exact product in official records

For weedkillers and other plant protection products, search HSE's pesticide product records and home-garden database. Match the name and approval number, then compare the authorisation holder, formulation and label with the offered pack. Check the destination territory and current sale, storage and use status. A similar name or matching active ingredient is a reason to investigate further, not to accept the supplier's claim.

For biocides such as ant or rodent treatments, check HSE's authorised and approved product records. Absence from those lists does not automatically establish that a product is unlawful. If you cannot find a match, send HSE the label and formulation and ask it to confirm the regulatory status before proceeding.

Check amateur use and every label condition

For an ordinary home-garden purchase, choose a product labelled for amateur or general-public use. Professional plant protection products must never be used by an untrained amateur gardener. Check the exact plant, crop or treatment area on the label; do not assume permission for a path also covers a lawn or vegetable bed.

Plant protection products must be used as instructed on the label. Read the application rate, dilution, treatment frequency and any conditions concerning harvest, protective equipment, children, pets, wildlife or water. For biocides, make the same practical checks against the intended pest and indoor or outdoor location. Request a readable copy before buying, rather than relying on an advert.

Confirm the route from China before shipment

For a China-supplied plant protection product, ask the authorisation holder to confirm that the offered pack is covered by the relevant authorisation and that the proposed supply route is appropriate. HSE considers applications for new pesticide parallel-trade permits only for Northern Ireland. Do not treat an own-use permit mentioned online as automatic permission for a direct China order; ask HSE about the exact product and destination.

For biocides in Great Britain, product authorisation requirements apply to making products available on the market. A purchase for personal use should not be treated as bypassing supply controls: HSE describes the first supply, paid or free, as placing on the market. Confirm the offered product's status with HSE if unclear. For shipment checks, see UK import licences and restrictions.

Make the purchase decision before paying

Keep the supplier's label photographs, official product record, relevant authorisation conditions and any written clarification together. Ask the carrier to confirm acceptance of the actual formulation and packaging, using the SDS where available. Our hobby chemical import guide provides related chemical-order checks.

Pause if the offered pack cannot be matched, the label does not cover your garden use, or the import route remains unclear. Compare the effort with buying a suitable product already supplied through a UK retailer, or using a physical control method. Cambridge China Bridge can gather supplier documents through its own staff in China; supplier checks should be kept separate from HSE's regulatory decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import weedkiller for personal use?

Personal use does not remove plant protection product authorisation requirements. Check the exact product, permitted garden use and destination, then confirm the supply and import route before ordering.

Is the same active ingredient enough?

Do not rely on that match alone. Compare the offered product's name, approval number, formulation, authorisation holder and complete label with the official record.

Can I use professional weedkiller in my garden?

An untrained amateur gardener must not use professional plant protection products. For an ordinary home-garden purchase, choose an amateur product and follow its label.

What if a pest-control product is not on HSE's list?

For biocides, absence from the lists does not automatically mean unlawful use. Ask HSE to confirm the exact product's regulatory status. Do not apply that qualification to an unlisted weedkiller.
