Can I import hobby chemicals from China?

Yes, potentially, but check the exact substance, concentration and destination before ordering. Restricted chemicals can require licensed public purchase, and delivery needs a separate check. Resolve your licensing position and obtain written carrier acceptance before payment. Cambridge China Bridge can gather the factory information for these checks.

Identify what you would actually import

Ask the factory for the full chemical name, substance identifier, ingredients, concentration and its measurement basis, physical form, quantity, packaging and current SDS. Match these across the quotation, specification and labels. A description such as laboratory reagent, cleaning acid or hobby material is too broad for a useful enquiry.

Describe the actual hobby and delivery address, including whether delivery is to England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Explain who will import, receive, store and use the chemical. Our import restrictions guide covers the separate tariff and authority checks.

Check public access against the exact concentration

Acquiring a restricted chemical above its concentration threshold without a valid licence is a criminal offence for a member of the public. Official guidance identifies the examples below as regulated substances. They are screening examples, not a complete chemical list. Ask the Home Office to assess your exact formulation and confirm the concentration basis before relying on a threshold.

Check regulated poisons separately from explosives precursors. Some products or product types have regulated-poison exemptions, so ask whether the exact product qualifies. Do not treat a hobby description, small sample or supplier's willingness to sell as your access decision.

Examples identified in official guidance
SubstanceConcentration identified as regulated
Nitric acidAbove 3%
Sulphuric acidAbove 15%

Resolve the licence and supply route before payment

Ask the Home Office whether your proposed import, possession and use need an explosives precursors and poisons licence, commonly called an EPP licence. Send the complete product file and explain the intended use. Applications are considered individually. If licensing applies, wait for the issued licence and compare its substance, concentration, volume and conditions with the proposed order.

For sales of regulated poisons to the public, the seller must be a registered pharmacist or operate under one’s supervision. Ask how the proposed supply route meets that requirement. Home Office EPP licences are not recognised in Northern Ireland. For that destination, resolve the applicable route separately before ordering. Describe personal use honestly rather than assuming a company invoice settles your status.

Obtain acceptance for the complete delivery route

Send the matching SDS and packaging details to the forwarder's dangerous goods specialist. Request written carrier acceptance covering the exact chemical, concentration, quantity, transport method and final delivery address. Ask the supplier and forwarder to confirm whether the proposed delivery is lawful, especially where a home address is involved. Keep unanswered conditions open before paying.

Ask the relevant transport authority or customs broker which dangerous goods shipment documents, if any, are needed in addition to an SDS for your proposed shipment. Use our SDS and shipping documents guide for that document check. Ask who prepares the classification, packaging, labels and declarations, and how acceptance covers each handover through to the final recipient. Reopen the check if the formulation, packaging, route or address changes.

Make the order depend on resolved checks

Keep the product specification, authority response, applicable licence, supplier's supply-route explanation and carrier acceptance together. Make payment and dispatch approval depend on resolving discrepancies. Compare importing with buying a suitable product from an established UK supplier, including transport, storage and disposal arrangements. Our UK REACH guide covers the separate chemical-regulation questions.

Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can request the factory's formulation documents, SDS, label drafts and packaging photographs for review. Ask us to coordinate those inputs before you commit. The order file should identify the actual product, intended user and accepted delivery route, with each unresolved question assigned to someone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import a small chemical sample for a hobby?

Do not treat sample size as permission. Check the exact substance, concentration and destination with the relevant authority, then obtain carrier acceptance for the actual package.

Do I need an EPP licence for home chemistry?

Public acquisition of restricted chemicals above their thresholds requires a valid licence. Ask the Home Office to confirm your exact product and the licensing position for import, possession and use before ordering.

Can I order hobby chemicals through my company?

Explain the actual personal or professional use to the Home Office and supplier. Do not assume a company invoice resolves public-access restrictions or your licensing position.

Will a courier accept chemicals if I have an SDS?

Obtain written acceptance for the exact chemical, concentration, packaging, route and delivery address. Ask the relevant transport authority or customs broker which shipment documents, if any, are needed in addition to an SDS. Do not assume an SDS alone confirms carrier acceptance.
