When a bulk order pays
A bigger order does not just buy a lower unit price. It spreads the costs that do not grow with quantity, such as tooling, samples, set-up and checking, over more units, and it fills more of the freight you are paying for. Our landed price guide shows the arithmetic on a hypothetical 2,000-unit order quoted at £4.00: goods, freight, UK handling, duty, tooling and samples come to £10,008 committed, £5.00 per unit ordered, and £5.16 per unit you can sell once 3% are allowed as unsellable.
Compare that figure, not the £4.00, with a UK wholesaler's price for the same item and quantity. If you are still testing demand, buying through a UK wholesaler or a platform or dropshipping can be the better first step.
Minimum orders
A minimum order quantity comes from the factory's set-up costs, so it moves when you remove set-up work: a stock colour, a standard box or an existing mould. It rarely moves just because you ask. Full container or shared
A bulk order that fills a container ships as a full container load; a smaller one shares space in a consolidated load, and several suppliers' goods can be combined into one shipment, see consolidation. Duty and VAT on a bulk order
Duty is charged on the customs value, which includes freight and insurance to the UK border, not only the invoice: in the same hypothetical example, duty at 3.5% is £308, 3.5% of an £8,800 customs value rather than of the £8,000 invoice. Import VAT is charged on the value plus duty, and a VAT-registered business normally reclaims it. What goes wrong with bulk orders
The bulk run does not match the approved sample, see making bulk production match the sample; the order is placed too close to Chinese New Year and ships weeks late, see Chinese New Year 2027 factory closure dates; goods are damaged or short at loading; and cash is tied up in stock that sells more slowly than planned.
Approve a sealed sample, write it into the order, inspect before the balance, and order the first run at a size you can afford to be wrong about.
