Buying a multimeter from China: safety checks
Choose by intended circuit, then verify the exact meter, leads and probes against supporting test reports. Obtain the fuse specification and replacement instructions before buying. Get an electrician's assessment before mains or uncertain circuit work. Factory evidence can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Define the work before choosing the instrument
Describe the intended tasks: battery-powered electronics, isolated bench circuits, appliance repairs or household wiring. Record the supply arrangement, possible voltage, available current and whether exposed live parts could be encountered. Treat an unknown circuit as a reason to stop and obtain an assessment, rather than choosing a meter by its advertised maximum range.
For general purchasing considerations, see sourcing oscilloscopes and multimeters. This guide adds a circuit-specific safety check. Ask for separate confirmation of suitability for electronics measurements and for any proposed mains work.
Verify the category claim for the complete kit
Ask for the claimed measurement category together with its voltage rating, identifying the exact input terminals, functions and accessories covered. A voltage range or accuracy claim alone does not establish suitability for your circuit. Have the laboratory explain whether the evidence covers your intended measurement location, including appliance circuits, socket outlets or distribution equipment.
Match the report's model, photographs, construction and supplied accessories to the marketplace listing and sample. Check the meter, leads, probes and clips separately; do not assume the meter's claim covers replacement accessories. Use our test report verification guide to check authenticity. If coverage remains unclear, hold approval for the proposed use.
Specify probes, leads and fuse protection
Request photographs and specifications showing probe finger barriers, exposed tip length, removable insulating caps, connector shrouds and lead insulation. Ask which category and voltage rating apply with each cap configuration. Check the sample for loose connectors, damaged insulation and missing barriers. Agree that production accessories must match the assessed configuration.
Obtain the manufacturer's fuse part reference, current and voltage ratings, breaking capacity, dimensions and replacement instructions for each protected input. Distinguish internal meter fuses from protection in the leads or probes; ask a competent assessor whether fused leads are needed. HSE guidance says replacement fuses must have the correct type and ratings and that glass fuses are unsuitable in this test-lead context.
Separate measurement from proving a circuit dead
A multimeter purchase and a safe isolation procedure are separate decisions. Ask an electrician to specify the contact voltage detector and proving equipment for any isolation task. HSE guidance warns against relying on non-contact devices to prove equipment dead. A voltage pen giving no indication is therefore insufficient grounds to begin work.
HSE guidance calls for testing the proving instrument before and after use. Ask the electrician to demonstrate the procedure and assess your competence before you undertake it. Do not practise unfamiliar isolation or live-testing methods on household wiring to evaluate a marketplace purchase.

Set a purchasing and use approval point
Obtain an electrician's assessment before work on household wiring, socket interiors or distribution boards, and whenever isolation, earthing, stored energy or circuit identity is uncertain. For exposed mains circuitry inside an appliance, use a repair professional competent in that equipment. An unplugged appliance should not be assumed free from stored energy.
Keep the intended-use record, verified reports, accessory specification, fuse details and English instructions together. For resale, use our electrical import rules guide for the wider obligations. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can collect factory evidence and compare supplied components with the agreed specification; circuit suitability needs the appropriate technical assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Is a marketplace multimeter category marking enough?
No. Match the claimed category and voltage rating to reports for the exact model, inputs and supplied accessories. Ask the laboratory to confirm coverage for your intended circuit.
What fuse details should I ask the seller for?
Ask for the part reference, current and voltage ratings, breaking capacity, dimensions and replacement instructions. Identify which inputs are protected and whether separate lead protection is needed.
Can a voltage pen prove my circuit is dead?
No. HSE guidance warns against relying on non-contact devices for proving dead. Ask an electrician to specify suitable contact testing and proving equipment and explain the isolation procedure.
When should an electrician assess my planned tests?
Before household wiring or distribution-board work, or whenever circuit identity, isolation, earthing or stored energy is uncertain. Use an appropriately competent repair professional for exposed mains circuitry inside appliances.
