Can under-18s buy China-sourced hobby goods?
Sometimes. The answer depends on the applicable UK law, the purchase and the seller's age conditions. Scotland gives contractual capacity from 16, with qualifications. For a custom hobby order, consider an adult buying in their own name. Confirm the buyer and seller with Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm who will sell the goods
Start by asking whether the UK company will sell you the goods or arrange a purchase as your agent. A UK contact does not establish that it is your goods seller. Our seller or sourcing agent guide explains the distinction; this guide concerns buying from a UK seller.
Tell the seller the proposed buyer's age, where they live and whether the goods are for personal hobby use or resale. Ask which UK jurisdiction's law the proposed contract uses. Our personal buying guide covers the wider sourcing brief and delivery checks.
Understand the UK jurisdiction differences
In England and Wales, and separately in Northern Ireland, the age of majority is 18. For minors, the Sale of Goods Act requires payment of a reasonable price where necessary goods are sold and delivered. These are goods suitable to the person's circumstances and actual requirements at the time. Do not assume a hobby purchase qualifies simply because the buyer wants it.
In Scotland, a person aged 16 or over has contractual capacity under the age-capacity legislation, subject to its qualifications. Below 16, an exception permits transactions commonly entered into by people of that age and circumstances, on terms that are not unreasonable. Do not assume bespoke factory production fits this exception.
Scottish law also permits an application before 21 to set aside a qualifying prejudicial transaction entered into from 16 but below 18. The statutory test concerns an imprudent transaction causing or likely to cause substantial prejudice, and exceptions apply. For an expensive or disputed order, ask a solicitor to assess the actual contract rather than treating age as the whole answer.
Check the seller's age conditions before checkout
Ask for the current account and ordering terms. Check whether the seller accepts younger buyers, asks for parental involvement or expects an adult purchaser. Treat account eligibility and contractual capacity as separate checks. Ask for written confirmation before paying; do not enter a false date of birth or borrow an adult's account to bypass a condition.
Identify the exact hobby goods and intended user. Ask the seller to check any product-specific purchase restrictions and suitability for that user. If an adult orders, still disclose that a child will use the goods. Ask about instructions, supervision and compatibility with existing equipment.
Make the adult's role clear
For custom goods, deposits or an order the seller will not accept from a younger buyer, a practical route is for a parent or another adult to buy in their own name. Ask for the quote, acceptance and invoice to identify that adult as purchaser, with the child identified separately as the intended user.
Ask the adult to approve the specification, total payable amount and cancellation terms, then place the order and manage changes or complaints. Record whose payment method is authorised. If the seller proposes parental consent or a guarantee instead, ask what the adult is signing and obtain advice before accepting unclear obligations.

Send a clear enquiry or resolve an existing order
Suggested enquiry: “The intended user is under 18 and lives in [UK jurisdiction]. The goods are for personal hobby use. Will you accept an order from them, or should an adult purchase in their own name? Please confirm the buyer, goods seller and applicable age conditions before payment.” Save the reply with the agreed quote and terms.
If an order already exists, preserve the buyer details, accepted terms, messages and payment record. Explain the facts to the seller and ask what it proposes before agreeing to replacement paperwork. For an order placed using a parent's saved card, follow our saved-card order guide; do not assume age alone guarantees a refund.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy hobby goods from China if I am under 18?
Sometimes. Check the applicable UK jurisdiction, the actual purchase and the seller's age conditions. Ask for written acceptance before paying, or arrange for an adult to purchase in their own name.
Can someone aged 16 order hobby goods in Scotland?
Scottish law gives contractual capacity from 16, subject to qualifications. Check the seller's ordering conditions too. A custom order still needs clear buyer details, specifications and terms.
Should my parent place the order?
For a custom order or where the seller expects an adult buyer, consider having your parent purchase in their own name. Ask the seller to name them as purchaser and identify you separately as the intended user.
Will I get a refund because I ordered under 18?
Do not assume so. Preserve the order and payment records, explain your age and circumstances to the seller, and seek advice on the actual contract. If you used a parent's saved card, involve them promptly.
