UK design applications for alternative samples
Register different shapes, patterns or decorations as separate designs, with a consistent illustration set for each version. You can include several designs in an online filing, uploading each separately. Keep sample revisions tied to the correct image set. Coordinate factory sample records with Cambridge China Bridge.

Separate versions before preparing images
IPO guidance requires different shapes, patterns or decorations to be registered as separate designs. Create a version register linking each candidate to its sample, drawing revision and proposed filing folder. For example, keep a rounded body separate from an angular body, and keep alternative decorative patterns separately identified. Use managing design revisions to control factory changes.
Keep every view tied to the same sample
Prepare each image set from the same frozen sample or drawing revision. Compare the outline, handle, edges and decoration across views before passing the folder to whoever files the application. A factory may send a front photograph from an earlier sample alongside a side photograph from a revised sample. Ask for replacements rather than treating that mismatch as another angle. Use comparing factory samples for the separate buying decision.
Prepare filing images separately from factory drawings
For each design, the illustrations must show only that version, use the same image type and present each view separately. Use clear images against a plain background, without hands, unrelated objects, text, measurements or technical information. Avoid shadows or reflections that hide details. Keep annotated manufacturing drawings in the working folder rather than using them as filing images.
Resolve what the images are intended to cover
If an illustration includes features you do not want to register, IPO guidance requires a written disclaimer explaining those exclusions. Before filing, ask your design adviser to check whether the proposed images and wording match your intention, especially when comparing shape-only candidates with decorated samples. Keep the agreed wording with the relevant version. For broader sourcing precautions, see protecting your IP and tooling.
Assemble and check the multiple-design filing
You can register up to 50 designs at a time online. Upload each design separately, then add the next when prompted. Filing fees depend on the number of designs, rather than illustrations. Before submission, reconcile the uploaded designs against your version register and check that no folder contains an abandoned revision.
Keep a copy of the submitted images and wording beside the corresponding sample records. When approving manufacture, tell the factory exactly which sampled version to use and record any later appearance changes for review. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help coordinate sample identification through product development.
Frequently asked questions
Can alternative shapes go in the same UK design?
Different shapes must be registered as separate designs. Give each candidate its own image folder so views from alternative samples are not mixed.
Can I mix photographs and drawings for a design?
IPO guidance requires the illustrations for a design to use the same image type. Choose a consistent set rather than filling missing views with another format.
Can I file several UK designs together?
Yes. Online filing allows up to 50 designs at a time. Upload each separately and add another when prompted.
What if I do not want to register the decoration?
Explain the excluded decoration in a written disclaimer. Ask your design adviser to check that the wording and images match the appearance you intend to register.
