Getting started

Steam showers from China: installation checks

Before paying a deposit, have your plumber and electrician review the exact model's electrical load, water feeds, steam outlet, hot discharge, drainage, ventilation and servicing space against your site. Request drawings and installation instructions through Cambridge China Bridge.

Get the exact model reviewed before ordering

Send your installers the proposed cabin or generator model, installation manual, wiring diagram and dimensioned layout. Ask the factory to identify everything supplied and everything needed locally. For a separate generator, request its sizing method for your enclosure, including glazing, finishes and intended use. For a complete cabin, include pumps, lights, controls and other electrical accessories.

Ask each installer to record what is acceptable, what needs changing and what remains unresolved before the deposit. Match test documents to the proposed assembly using product test report checks. Put the agreed connections, equipment and drawings in your product specification, and require approval before substitutions.

Check electrical demand and bathroom placement

Ask the electrician to compare the specified voltage, frequency, phase arrangement and maximum simultaneous load with the site's supply capacity and existing loads. Have them specify the circuit, cable route, protective devices, residual-current protection, earthing and isolation. Request confirmation of whether a supply upgrade is needed before ordering.

Show the electrician where the generator, controls, connections and isolator will sit relative to water and steam. Ask them to assess bathroom zones and equipment suitability for those positions. In England, Approved Document P covers electrical safety in dwellings. Ask which notification, inspection and certification arrangements apply to your project; for other UK locations or commercial premises, obtain a site-specific assessment.

Separate shower water from generator water

Ask the factory to identify the shower's hot and cold feeds separately from the generator's specified feed. Have the plumber compare measured pressure and flow with the model's operating limits, including when other outlets run. Confirm connection drawings, isolation points, water quality requirements and whether the proposed treatment equipment suits the generator.

Use our plumber checks for taps and showers for fitting evidence, backflow assessment and water-supplier notification checks. Add the generator feed and any flushing or dosing connections to that review. Ask for the proposed protection arrangement on the installation drawing rather than accepting a valve supplied without an explanation.

Review scald protection and the steam route

Ask the plumber to assess the shower mixer separately from the steam controls. Request the mixer commissioning procedure and checks for changes in supply pressure or loss of a feed. For the steam system, request evidence of temperature control, overheat protection and low-water shutdown, with instructions for testing those functions.

Mark the steam outlet, seat, standing area and temperature sensor on the drawing. Ask how the layout avoids direct steam contact and contact with hot fittings. Have the installer check the manufacturer's steam-pipe material, insulation, routing and condensate instructions. Agree protective measures for the intended users and a commissioning procedure before anyone enters the cabin.

Plan drainage and ventilation together

Identify shower waste, condensate and generator flushing or drain-down discharge separately. Ask the factory for discharge temperature, flow and timing information, then have the plumber specify suitable pipework, traps, falls and discharge arrangements. Check capacity during simultaneous use, leak testing and access to clear blockages. In England, Approved Document H covers foul water drainage and disposal.

Ask the ventilation designer to assess moisture released during use and when the door opens, extraction to outside, replacement air and drying afterwards. Distinguish enclosure ventilation from the generator's cooling needs. In England, Approved Document F provides ventilation guidance; have the designer establish which edition applies to the project. For enclosure and floor interfaces, see wet-room waterproofing checks.

Prove maintenance access before closing walls

Draw the access panels and the route for removing the generator. Check that an installer can reach electrical isolation, water valves, filters, drain valves, sensors and service connections without dismantling the cabin. Ask the factory for service clearances and show how panels will open after tiling, furniture and pipework are installed.

Agree descaling, flushing, cleaning and inspection instructions for the local water and intended usage. Request spare-part identifiers, replacement availability and fault-finding information. Before handover, arrange installer checks of leaks, drainage, temperature controls, protective shutdowns and drying performance. Keep the commissioning records and final drawings with the manual. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can obtain factory drawings and clarify outstanding model details.

Frequently asked questions

Can I plug a Chinese steam shower into an existing socket?

Have the electrician review the exact model's supply instructions, total load and proposed connection position. Agree the circuit, protection and isolation before buying.

Does a steam generator need a hot-water connection?

Check the exact generator manual. Ask the factory to distinguish its specified feed from the cabin's shower feeds, and have the plumber confirm pressure, flow, water quality and protection.

Can the steam generator drain into the shower waste?

Ask the plumber to assess the manufacturer's discharge temperature, flow and timing against the proposed waste system. Agree pipe suitability, capacity and the connection arrangement before ordering.

Can I hide a steam generator behind tiles?

Only plan that location after checking the manufacturer's conditions, cooling needs, service clearances and removal route. Agree access to isolation, valves and service parts before closing the wall.
