UK duty on zinc rain chains
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 7907 covers other articles of zinc. Zinc rain chains are candidates for 7907 00 00 90, which carries 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is listed. The table shows product variants using the same tariff line.
The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. For goods from China described as scrap, discarded chains or material for recovery, confirm the applicable requirement with your customs broker before shipment.
Confirm the commodity code using the material and complete product description. Galvanised steel is steel, even when advertised as zinc-coated. For the wider product family, see zinc rainwater downpipes.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

Zinc material, gutter fit and water flow
Specify zinc rather than zinc-coated steel, and agree the material composition, sheet or wire thickness, overall hanging length, cup openings or link geometry, finish and joint construction. Include drawings for the gutter hanger and bottom anchor. Identify any supplied fittings made from other metals.
Approve an assembled sample on the intended gutter outlet. Run water through it to assess overflow, splash and whether water follows the chain. Check movement in wind and the proposed discharge point. Consumer rain chains supplied in Great Britain must be safe; assess sharp edges, opening joints and falling components.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 500 zinc rain chains, illustrative order under 7907 00 00 90, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,900, so it is £1,980. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Material: compare batch material evidence and sampled components with the agreed zinc specification; check for substituted zinc-coated steel.
Assembly: measure hanging length and cup openings, check joint closure, and load the hanger, links and anchor against the agreed specification.
Water flow: test an assembled chain with the approved gutter connection; record splash, overflow and water escaping at joints.
Finish and packing: check burrs, cracked seams and crushed cups; confirm chains cannot rub together or puncture their wrapping. Use quality inspection to define the checks before dispatch.

What goes wrong
A sample can look right while the shipment uses thinner material, loose connecting loops or a different hanger. Cups can arrive dented, and a chain that fits the gutter can still splash onto paths or walls. Agree acceptance criteria using the assembled sample rather than photographs alone.
Do not approve a whole batch solely on surface appearance. Compare material evidence, check joint strength and repeat the water-flow trial on production samples. Keep the approved sample available when checking arrival damage and factory substitutions.
