Sourcing zinc-air hearing aid batteries from China

Zinc-air hearing aid batteries from China carry 4% UK duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown in the supplied tariff record. Batteries must meet the mercury limit, and importers should confirm with the relevant authority which battery producer duties apply before placing them on the UK market. Cambridge China Bridge sources zinc-air hearing aid batteries.

Duty on zinc-air hearing aid batteries

Heading 8506 covers primary cells and primary batteries. Finished zinc-air hearing aid cells fall under 8506 60 00 00, described as air-zinc. The table shows supply formats sharing that commodity line. For other chemistries, see the primary batteries and button cells guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, zinc-air cells from China carried 4% duty. The supplied record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for finished zinc-air cells. The suspension for cathode rolls under 8506 90 00 00 concerns manufacturing parts, not finished hearing aid batteries.

The tariff record attaches an export control of mercury to the zinc-air line; it does not list an import control on that line. Ask your customs broker to confirm its relevance to the goods and transaction. Confirm the commodity code using the cell chemistry and whether the shipment contains finished cells or manufacturing parts.

Specify the cell, activation tab and discharge test

Specify zinc-air chemistry, cell dimensions, polarity, compatible hearing aid models, pack format and the manufacturer's size designation. Approve a sample in the intended device. Agree a discharge test with the load, activation procedure, temperature, humidity and end-point stated; a capacity figure without its test conditions is difficult to compare.

Specify the air-hole arrangement, activation-tab seal, tab grip and instructions for removing the tab before use. Ask the factory to state its activation waiting time and storage conditions. Agree how production dates, batch codes and expiry claims will be checked, and retain sealed samples from each shipment.

Batteries cannot contain more than 0.0005% mercury by weight. Obtain chemical reports matching the cell supplied and confirm cadmium requirements and any applicable medical-use exception with the relevant authority. Confirm which battery producer duties for collection and treatment apply, and plan for them before selling in the UK. Button cell packaging should be hard for children to open and carry clear warnings.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 10,000 zinc-air hearing aid cells, illustrative order under 8506 60 00 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,600. Duty at 4% is £144. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,744, so it is £748.80. Import taxes total £892.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £144 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: check dimensions, polarity and contact with the approved hearing aid; compare the cell and pack designation with the approved sample.

Performance: discharge samples from each batch under the agreed conditions after activation; record voltage, run time and any leakage.

Tabs and packs: check that tabs seal the air holes, remain attached in transit and can be gripped by the intended user; inspect pack seals and child resistance.

Traceability and marking: match batch and date codes to factory records and chemical reports; check warnings, the separate collection symbol and chemical symbols where required. Arrange quality inspection against the approved specification.

What goes wrong

Loose activation tabs, damaged seals and old stock can undermine the delivered performance. A cell may fit the hearing aid yet give disappointing run time because the factory's capacity claim used different test conditions. Check sealed samples and activated samples separately, and investigate failures by batch.

Mixed cell sizes, unreadable date codes and packs that are difficult for the intended user to handle create avoidable returns. Approve the complete retail pack alongside the cell, then compare bulk production with that sample. Do not accept a generic chemical report that cannot be matched to the supplied product.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on zinc-air hearing aid batteries from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 4% duty under 8506 60 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for finished zinc-air cells.

Does the cathode suspension cover finished hearing aid batteries?

No. The supplied suspension concerns cathode rolls for air-zinc hearing aid button cells under the parts line 8506 90 00 00. Finished zinc-air cells remain at 4%.

What should I ask the factory to test?

Ask for batch-matched chemical reports, dimensions, leakage checks and discharge results under agreed hearing aid loads. State the activation procedure and test conditions.

Do hearing aid battery importers have producer duties?

Confirm with the relevant authority whether the business placing batteries on the UK market has battery producer duties for collection and treatment. Plan for any applicable duties alongside chemical compliance, labelling and packaging.
