UK duty on woven satin ribbon
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 25 October 2026, heading 5806 covers narrow woven fabrics and adhesive-assembled warp fabrics. This guide concerns woven satin ribbon. The relevant lines distinguish cotton, man-made fibres and other textile materials; man-made fibre ribbon is also divided by whether it has real selvedges.
All the selected lines carry 6% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control for these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.
Confirm the fibre composition and edge construction with a sample before choosing the commodity code. Satin describes the weave, so the product name alone does not establish the material. For the wider ribbon heading, see grosgrain ribbon.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Man-made fibre satin ribbon with real selvedges | 5806 32 10 00 | 6% | None |
| Other man-made fibre satin ribbon | 5806 32 90 00 | 6% | None |
| Cotton satin ribbon | 5806 31 00 00 | 6% | None |
| Satin ribbon of other textile materials, including silk | 5806 39 00 90 | 6% | None |
Specify the satin faces, edges and winding
State the fibre composition, width, permitted width variation, roll length and whether the glossy satin finish is required on either face or both. Approve a physical colour sample and specify the reverse appearance, handle and stiffness. Identify woven selvedges separately from cut or heat-sealed edges.
Agree whether joins are allowed and how the factory must mark them. Specify winding direction, core size and roll labels so ribbon feeds correctly into your cutting or bow-making process. Keep an approved roll as the reference for quality inspection.
Consumer ribbon supplied in Great Britain must be safe under the general product safety rules. REACH restrictions can limit or ban substances used in articles. For ribbon intended for prolonged skin contact, ask for colour-specific dye evidence and confirm with HSE which azo dye restrictions, if any, apply.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 rolls of polyester satin ribbon with real selvedges under 5806 32 10 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £35,000. Duty at 6% is £2,100. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £37,100, so it is £7,420. Import taxes total £9,520; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,100 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Colour and sheen: compare rolls from different cartons with the approved sample under consistent lighting, checking the reverse as well as the glossy face.
Edges and weave: inspect for loose selvedges, fraying, pulled yarns, snags and heat-sealed edges that feel hard or curl.
Length and joins: unwind sampled rolls, measure usable length and check for concealed joins, short winding and incorrect core labels.
Use trial: tie the intended bow or run the ribbon through your equipment; check slipping, creasing and colour transfer onto the actual packaging or fabric.

What goes wrong
A glossy approval sample can hide a different reverse finish in production. Mixed dye lots create visible shade changes across a packaging range, while uneven winding leaves creases and makes rolls feed poorly. A ribbon that looks correct loose may be too soft to hold the intended bow.
Agree acceptance criteria against the retained sample before production. Separate suspect dye lots on arrival, record defects against the roll labels and check replacement samples for the same fibre, edge construction and handle.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on satin ribbon from China?
The relevant heading 5806 lines all carry 6% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Is satin ribbon always made from silk?
No. Satin describes the weave. Ask the factory to declare the fibre composition and approve a sample; polyester and silk ribbon can look similar but differ in handle and classification.
Should I order satin ribbon glossy on both sides?
Specify both glossy faces when the reverse will show in bows or garment trims. If only the outer face matters, approve the reverse finish as well so bulk production matches your sample.
How do I check whether ribbon rolls are short?
Unwind sampled rolls and measure the usable ribbon against the agreed roll length. Record joins and damaged sections separately, and agree how these affect acceptance before ordering.
