UK duty on grosgrain ribbon

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 November 2026, heading 5806 covers narrow woven fabrics, excluding goods of heading 5807, and adhesive-assembled warp fabrics without weft. Grosgrain is the ribbed woven ribbon covered here. The relevant lines distinguish cotton, man-made fibres with real selvedges, other man-made fibre fabrics and other textile materials.

Every line in the supplied heading snapshot carries 6% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control is recorded. This tariff position does not replace product safety checks. The wider hamper packaging guide covers ribbon alongside baskets and boxes.

Give your customs broker the fibre composition, construction and edge details rather than the trade name alone. Confirm the commodity code before shipping, especially for blends or elastic versions. For the tax calculation, see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify ribs, edges and bow behaviour

Specify fibre composition, finished width and tolerance, rib spacing, thickness, stiffness, colour reference and edge construction. State whether the ribbon must lie straight for gift wrapping or shape around a garment. Approve a physical sample tied or sewn in its intended position, rather than judging a photograph.

Agree usable length per roll, permitted joins, winding tension, core type and packing by colour and dye batch. Consumer products imported or sold in the UK must be safe. REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances; ask a testing provider to identify the checks relevant to the dyes, finishes and intended use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 metres of polyester grosgrain ribbon with real selvedges under 5806 32 10 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,400. Duty at 6% is £384. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,784, so it is £1,356.80. Import taxes total £1,740.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £384 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Construction: compare fibre documentation, transverse ribs, width and edge structure against the approved sample; check for loose yarns, damaged selvedges and uneven stiffness.

Colour: compare rolls and dye batches under the same light; check dry and damp rubbing against white material and against the actual garment or gift box.

Rolls: unwind sampled rolls to check usable length, hidden joins, creases and inconsistent winding; retain batch identification with the inspection record.

Use: tie the intended bow or sew the intended trim, checking fraying, slipping and distortion. For washable trims, check shrinkage and colour transfer after the intended wash. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A sample can tie neatly while bulk ribbon is too stiff or too soft to hold the same bow. Another failure is matching the face colour but missing a different rib texture or edge finish. Keep the approved ribbon and a finished application as comparison samples.

Mixed dye batches create visible shade changes across a range, while hidden joins interrupt cutting and packing. Dark ribbon can mark pale boxes or garments. Agree how defective lengths and joins will be recorded, and inspect unwound ribbon before accepting the delivery.
