12% duty on the selected jacket lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 6211 covers tracksuits, ski suits, swimwear and other garments. The selected other-garment lines provide classification candidates for woven fencing jackets, separated by cotton or man-made fibres and men's or women's garments. Each carries 12% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed.

The selected lines attach import controls on cat and dog fur and seal products, plus an export control on cat and dog fur. Cat and dog fur and products made from it are banned from import and export. Commercial seal-product imports are restricted to qualifying traditional indigenous hunts and require a seal catch attestation issued by a recognised body. For any animal-derived trim in a China shipment, confirm the requirement with your customs broker before ordering.

Confirm the commodity code using the finished jacket, fibre composition and fabric construction. The table is a shortlist for classification, rather than a ruling for every design. For the wider heading, see woven karate uniforms.

Specify the protective construction and fencing fit

Define the intended fencing use and claimed protection before comparing samples. For jackets supplied as personal protective equipment in Great Britain, conformity assessment must follow the applicable risk category. Most new protective equipment needs CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Ask for supporting documents that identify the proposed finished jacket.

Specify the woven fabric, fibre composition, weight, protective layers, seam construction, collar coverage, underarm reinforcement, fastening overlap and retaining strap. State left-handed or right-handed closure, chest and sleeve measurements, size grading and washing instructions. Check a fit sample while reaching and lunging, with the intended equipment underneath. Use testing and certification to match reports to the proposed construction.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 500 woven fencing jackets; illustrative order, FOB value and freight under 6211 33 90 00, invoiced at £11,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,800. Duty at 12% is £1,416. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,216, so it is £2,643.20. Import taxes total £4,059.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,416 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fabric: compare the weave, weight and layers with the approved sample; check for thin areas, damaged yarns and unauthorised substitutions.

Seams and closure: inspect underarms, shoulders, collar attachment, fastening overlap and retaining-strap stitching; check for skipped stitches and seam opening during movement.

Fit: measure each supplied size against the agreed chart; check sleeve reach, collar comfort and coverage while lunging, and confirm closure handedness.

Labels and documents: check the required fibre-content label, model identity, protective marking, declaration and English instructions against the supplied jacket. Visual inspection cannot establish protective performance. Arrange quality inspection against the approved sample.

What goes wrong

A factory may match the sample's appearance while changing the fabric, protective layers or seam construction. Short sleeves, tight underarms and the wrong closure handedness become apparent during fencing movements. Washing can alter fit or distort fastening overlap, so compare a washed sample with the agreed measurements.

A fabric report or certificate for another jacket leaves the finished model's claimed protection unresolved. Agree which documents and tests cover the complete construction before accepting production. Keep decorative embroidery and club branding within the agreed design rather than allowing unreviewed changes to protective areas.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on woven fencing jackets from China?

The selected cotton and man-made fibre other-garment lines carry 12% duty. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for those lines.

Do woven fencing jackets need CE or UKCA marking?

For jackets supplied as personal protective equipment in Great Britain, most new products need CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions.

Is a fabric test report enough for a fencing jacket?

Do not accept a fabric report alone as proof of the finished jacket's protection. Match the supporting assessment and reports to its layers, seams, closures and exact model.

What should I check on a fencing jacket sample?

Check protective layers, underarm and shoulder seams, collar coverage, fastening overlap, retaining strap and closure handedness. Try reaching and lunging, then compare measurements after washing.
