UK duty on women's woven waistcoats

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 6211 covers tracksuits, ski suits and swimwear, and other garments. This guide selects classification candidates for women's woven waistcoats by textile material, including a man-made fibre occupational clothing line for qualifying uniform garments.

Selected lines carry 12% duty for China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension. All attach a seal-products import control; the ordinary clothing lines also attach cat-and-dog-fur import and export controls. Cat and dog fur products cannot be imported. Seal products for sale in Great Britain must qualify for the Inuit and other indigenous communities’ exemption and have a seal catch certificate. For any proposed animal material, confirm eligibility and documents with your customs broker before ordering.

Send your broker garment photographs, woven fabric details, fibre composition and intended use to confirm the commodity code. Do not select occupational clothing solely because a waistcoat carries a company logo. For related garments within the wider heading, see men's woven waistcoats.

Specify bust fit, lining and front balance

Specify shell, back panel and lining fabrics separately, with composition, weight, colour and finish. Agree bust and waist measurements, dart positions, shoulder width, armhole shape, neckline depth and front length. Approve a fit sample over the intended blouse or shirt, checking that the buttoned front lies flat when the wearer sits and moves.

Define functional and decorative pockets, button and buttonhole positions, rear adjuster construction, lining ease and seam finish. Fibre labels must show fibre content, including fur or other animal parts. Where components have different fibre contents, each component's content must be shown. Agree care instructions against a wash or cleaning trial.

Only sell consumer garments once compliance with product safety requirements has been demonstrated appropriately. Include checks for sharp buckle edges, loose buttons and exposed broken needles in the inspection brief, alongside appearance and fit.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 women's woven cotton waistcoats under 6211 42 90 00, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,800. Duty at 12% is £696. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,496, so it is £1,299.20. Import taxes total £1,995.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £696 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit and balance: measure each size against the approved chart; check bust gaping, armhole rubbing, shoulder position and whether the front hem hangs evenly.

Lining and seams: check lining ease, twisted back panels, puckered darts, secure pocket corners and clean armhole finishing.

Fastenings: operate buttons and rear adjusters; check button attachment, buttonhole fraying, buckle edges and whether the adjustment holds.

Fabric and labels: compare shell, back and lining with approved materials; check fibre labels, shade variation, colour transfer and distortion after the agreed cleaning trial. Use the quality inspection guide to organise checks.

What goes wrong

A waistcoat can match flat measurements yet gape across the bust or ride up when seated. Dart placement and front balance matter as much as chest width. Approve the buttoned sample on the intended wearer and underlayer, then check size grading rather than accepting a larger sample as proof that every size fits.

A lining cut too tightly pulls the shell out of shape. Different shrinkage between the front, back and lining can twist the garment after cleaning, while a slipping rear adjuster changes the fit during wear. Retain an approved cleaned sample and record these acceptance points before bulk production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on women's woven waistcoats from China?

The selected lines carry 12% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension is recorded for these lines in the supplied tariff snapshot.

Do women's woven waistcoats need fibre labels?

Yes. Labels must show fibre content, including fur or other animal parts. If components have different fibre contents, each component's content must be shown.

Can a branded waistcoat use an occupational clothing code?

Confirm the classification with your customs broker using construction, composition and intended use. A company logo alone is not a sound basis for choosing the occupational clothing line.

What should I check on a women's waistcoat sample?

Check bust gaping, dart position, armhole comfort and front balance while buttoned and seated. Test lining ease, button attachment, rear-adjuster grip and shape after the intended cleaning process.
