A flat 10% on woven baby sailor suits

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 6209 covers babies' garments and clothing accessories. Woven sailor suits for children up to 86 cm body height fall within this babywear scope. The relevant garment lines distinguish cotton, synthetic fibres, wool or fine animal hair, and other textile materials. See the wider woven babywear guide.

The selected lines carry 10% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duties and no suspensions. The tariff attaches cat and dog fur and seal-product import controls, plus CITES controls on the wool and other-textile lines. Cat and dog fur products are banned from import and export. Seal-derived trim is subject to a ban; confirm the applicable requirement with your customs broker. CITES-listed materials may need permits; confirm the species and import documents with your broker.

Confirm the commodity code from the woven construction, fibre composition and intended body height before ordering. Knitted baby garments belong under heading 6111. Do not assume that a sailor collar determines classification. Give your broker the composition of each garment and details of any separately packed accessories.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026.

Specify the sailor collar, trim and fit

Specify fabric construction, fibre composition, fabric weight, colour references and the size chart with measurement tolerances. Define the sailor collar shape, stripe placement, embroidery backing, neckline opening, waist fit and changing access. Approve the top and bottoms together, including their appearance after washing.

Confirm the applicable baby-clothing safety regime with Trading Standards for Great Britain or Northern Ireland, as appropriate. Agree attachment testing for buttons, snaps and bows, and assess decorative ties for cord hazards. Confirm fibre-labelling requirements with Trading Standards and ask HSE which UK REACH nickel and azo restrictions apply to the actual skin-contact metal snaps and dyes. Use testing and certification support to agree evidence for the actual fabrics and trims.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 500 cotton woven baby sailor suits under 6209 20 00 90, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,800. Duty at 10% is £580. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,380, so it is £1,276. Import taxes total £1,856; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £580 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Clothing designed for babies and young children is zero-rated under HMRC's VAT Notice 714, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product.

Inspection checklist

Collar and trim: compare collar symmetry, stripe alignment and embroidery with the approved sample; check that backing and seam edges do not scratch the skin.

Fastenings and ties: pull-test buttons, snaps and attached bows before and after washing against the agreed specification; inspect tie loops, loose threads and accessible decorative parts.

Wash performance: wash the complete outfit using the proposed care instructions; check navy colour transfer onto white panels, collar distortion, puckering and shrinkage.

Fit and labels: measure garments from each size, check neckline and changing access, match fibre labels to the approved composition and reconcile carton contents with the order.

What goes wrong

A navy collar can stain the white body during washing. Collar facings and stripe tapes may shrink differently from the main fabric, leaving curled edges or puckered seams. A sample that looks balanced on a hanger can also have a neckline too tight for dressing.

Decorative anchor buttons, glued bows and detachable neck ties need particular attention. Check their attachment and accessibility rather than accepting appearance alone. Hold garments with loose parts or unexpected colour transfer while the cause is investigated, and compare corrected samples after washing before approving replacement production.

The relevant heading 6209 garment lines carry 10% duty, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duties or suspensions in the supplied tariff snapshot.

Does a sailor collar change the commodity code?

The sailor styling alone does not determine the code. Confirm woven construction, fibre composition and babywear sizing; knitted baby garments belong under heading 6111.

Can baby sailor suits have a decorative neck tie?

Assess the design for cord hazards and attachment safety before approving it. Agree the construction and testing with your laboratory rather than copying an adult sailor tie.

What should I wash-test on a navy and white sailor suit?

Wash the complete outfit using the proposed care instructions. Check colour transfer, collar curling, stripe-tape puckering, shrinkage and fastening security.
