Sourcing wooden watch boxes from China
Wooden watch boxes from China generally carry 0% or 2% UK duty; the separate marquetry and inlaid-wood line carries 4%. Confirm the timber species and finished-product code, check CITES controls where relevant, and ensure consumer boxes are safe in use. Cambridge China Bridge sources wooden watch boxes.

Duty depends on timber and classification
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 4420 covers wooden caskets, jewellery cases and similar articles, including the watch boxes considered here. Ordinary finished boxes of other wood carry 0% duty from China; those of specified tropical wood carry 2%. The separate wood marquetry and inlaid-wood line carries 4%. A decorative inlay alone should not be your basis for choosing that line.
The supplied tariff lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. They attach CITES import controls, and some also attach an ivory import control. For CITES-listed timber, check the applicable permits before importing from China into Great Britain. Ivory dealing is banned; specify no real ivory and, if any is proposed, confirm the registration or exemption paperwork with your customs broker. Export controls are also listed and need separate checking for onward export.
Confirm the commodity code using the species, construction and finished-box description. The table distinguishes finished-box lines from marquetry, rather than treating them as interchangeable. For the wider family, see wooden jewellery boxes.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden watch boxes of other wood | 4420 90 99 90 | 0% | None |
| Hand-made watch boxes of specified tropical wood | 4420 90 91 19 | 2% | None |
| Other watch boxes of specified tropical wood | 4420 90 91 99 | 2% | None |
| Wood marquetry and inlaid wood for watch-box designs | 4420 90 10 00 | 4% | None |
Specify the cushions and lid clearance
State whether the shell is solid wood or a veneered board, name the timber species, and approve the grain, colour and lacquer on a physical sample. Specify compartment dimensions, removable cushions, lining material, hinge position, clasp and any glass window. Use representative watches to approve cushion compression, strap fit and clearance between the watch face and the closed lid.
Consumer boxes sold in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Check for splinters, sharp hardware, insecure glass and lid movement that could trap fingers. Paints and lacquers should be checked against UK REACH restrictions. This guide concerns storage boxes; have powered watch winders assessed separately before including them in the order.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 wooden watch boxes; FOB value and freight are illustrative under 4420 90 99 90, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,800, so it is £1,960. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Watch fit: insert representative watches, close the lid and check that faces, crowns and straps do not touch the lid or neighbouring compartments.
Cushions and lining: compare firmness and size with the approved sample; inspect loose fibres, exposed glue, lifting edges and colour transfer onto a clean cloth.
Shell and hardware: check grain and finish, lid alignment, hinge security, clasp operation and any glass-window attachment. Open and close sample boxes repeatedly.
Moisture and packing: inspect for mould, splits, warping, tacky lacquer and odour before dispatch and on arrival. Check protective wrapping and carton damage at inspection.

What goes wrong
A box can match the exterior sample yet fail with actual watches inside. Overfilled cushions strain straps, shallow compartments let watch faces touch the lid, and rough lining or exposed glue can mark a case. Approve the complete interior with representative watches before production.
Wet timber can warp the lid or grow mould in transit; uncured lacquer can stick to wrapping, and loose hinges can leave the lid uneven. Record these checks in the purchase specification and compare production and arrival samples with the approved box.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on wooden watch boxes from China?
Finished boxes of other wood carry 0%; specified tropical-wood boxes carry 2%. The separate marquetry and inlaid-wood line carries 4%. The supplied tariff facts show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.
Do rosewood watch boxes need CITES permits?
Many rosewoods are CITES-listed. Ask for the species name and check the applicable permit requirements before importing. A trade name such as rosewood is insufficient to settle the question.
How do I check whether large watches will fit?
Approve the compartment dimensions and cushion compression using representative watches. Close the lid with watches fitted and check clearance around faces, crowns and straps.
Why do wooden watch boxes arrive mouldy or warped?
Timber moisture and damp packing can cause mould and movement during transit. Check moisture, finish curing and protective packing before dispatch, then inspect cartons and boxes on arrival.
