Sourcing wooden pen presentation boxes from China
Wooden pen presentation boxes from China carry 0% or 2% UK duty according to timber, while wood marquetry and inlaid wood carry 4%. Boxes sold to consumers in Great Britain must be safe; timber covered by CITES needs the relevant import documents. Cambridge China Bridge sources wooden pen presentation boxes.

Duty by timber and construction
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 4420 covers wooden caskets, cases and similar articles, alongside ornaments and marquetry. For pen presentation boxes, other-wood cases carry 0% duty from China and cases of specified tropical wood carry 2%. Wood marquetry and inlaid wood carry 4%; decorative veneer alone should not be assumed to establish that classification. The supplied tariff snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions.
The tariff attaches CITES import control: where the species listing covers the box, obtain the relevant import permit. It also attaches ivory import control to several candidate lines. For proposed ivory decoration, check exemption eligibility and confirm the import documents with your customs broker. Specify ivory-free decoration for ordinary new stock. The snapshot also lists cultural-object and other export controls; ask your broker to check these if subsequently exporting the boxes.
Confirm the commodity code using the species, construction, intended use and photographs. The table gives candidate classifications, rather than interchangeable choices. See the wooden watch boxes guide for related cases within the wider heading.

Specify the pen fit, timber and lining
Give the factory the actual pen or an accurate drawing, including the cap, clip and widest barrel section. Specify usable internal space, groove shape, finger access, lining thickness and how the pen is held during transport. State whether pens are included. Approve a sample with the intended pen fitted and the lid fully closed.
Specify solid wood or a veneered panel core, the timber species, finish, hinge, closure and logo position. Agree acceptable grain and colour variation against the sample. Boxes supplied to consumers in Great Britain must be safe under general product safety law. Check finishes against UK REACH restrictions, as explained in the site's wooden boxes guide.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 2,000 wooden pen presentation boxes, illustrative only under 4420 90 99 90, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,800, so it is £1,960. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Pen fit: fit the intended pen, close the lid and check that the clip and cap do not rub. Tilt the closed box to check retention, then remove the pen without forcing it.
Timber and finish: compare species, grain and colour with the sample. Check moisture against the agreed specification, mould, splits, splinters, tacky lacquer and persistent odour.
Hardware and lining: repeatedly operate hinges and closures. Check lid alignment, loose screws, sharp edges, lifting fabric, exposed glue and lining fibres that catch on the pen.
Packing and arrival: open cartons from different parts of the shipment. Check crushed corners, rubbed finishes, damp liners and mould before accepting stock. Use the inspection guide to define the checks.

What goes wrong
A box can look correct when empty but press against the pen clip when closed. Thick lining reduces usable space, loose grooves let pens knock against the lid, and adhesive marks stain the lining. Test the complete box with the intended pen before approving production.
Damp timber can warp so the lid no longer meets the base. Uncured lacquer sticks to protective wrapping, while weak lining adhesive releases in transit. Compare arrival samples with the approved sample and record defects before distributing the stock.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on wooden pen presentation boxes from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% for other-wood cases and 2% for specified tropical-wood cases. Wood marquetry and inlaid wood carry 4%. Classification depends on the actual box.
Do rosewood pen boxes need CITES documents?
Some rosewoods are CITES-listed. Ask for the scientific species name and check whether its listing covers the finished box. Obtain the relevant import documents where it does.
Can I approve a pen box without sending a pen?
An accurate drawing can support sampling, but test the approved box with the intended pen before production. Check the clip, cap, lining and closed-lid clearance.
Why do wooden pen boxes arrive warped or mouldy?
Damp timber and moisture entering the packing can cause warping and mould. Agree moisture and packing specifications, inspect before shipment and check cartons on arrival.
