Duty and species checks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 4419 covers wooden tableware and kitchenware, including chopping boards. The relevant wooden and bamboo board lines all carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions.

The tariff attaches an import CITES control to 4419 90 00 00. Listed species require a permit; ask your customs broker to confirm the documentation applicable to the exact species and shipment from China. The record also lists a DCMS export licence control on these lines and an export CITES control on 4419 90 00 00; confirm their relevance with your broker if exporting.

Confirm the commodity code from the wood species and construction before ordering. A bamboo board has its own line; a bamboo-fibre product bound with plastic is classified as plastic. See wooden and bamboo kitchenware for the wider heading.

Specify the wood, glue and cutting surface

Name the wood species rather than accepting a description such as hardwood. Specify solid wood, edge-grain or end-grain construction, finished dimensions, thickness, flatness, edge shape and any juice groove. Agree acceptable knots, colour variation and repairs against a retained sample.

Confirm with the relevant food-safety authority the requirements concerning transfer of substances from wood that touches food. Ask for the oil, wax or lacquer and adhesive specifications, and arrange migration testing on finished samples. Agree washing and re-oiling instructions and test any dishwasher-safe claim before printing it.

Set an agreed moisture condition and packing method. Ask the factory to record moisture readings by lot, protect the cutting surfaces and pack dry boards with suitable moisture protection. Make the inspection brief match the approved sample.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 5,000 bamboo chopping boards, illustrative order only under 4419 11 00 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,200, so it is £2,040. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Surface: check both faces, edges and juice grooves for splinters, rough patches, sticky finish and colour transfer. Check odour after soaking a sample.

Construction: check flatness on a level surface, thickness against the specification and glue lines after agreed soak-and-dry cycles.

Moisture and packing: record sampled moisture readings, inspect for mould and insect holes, and check cartons and moisture protection again on arrival.

Documents and care: match finish and adhesive records and test reports to the supplied boards; check care instructions and any dishwasher claim. Use the inspection guide to define the checks.

What goes wrong

Wet timber and weak glue lines lead to warping, splitting and delamination after washing. Poorly dried boards can develop mould in transit. A thick or unsuitable finish can remain sticky or leave an odour. Compare production samples with the approved board before shipment.

Species substitutions can also change the classification or CITES checks. Keep the species description, construction and finish in the purchase specification. On arrival, photograph wet packing, mould, cracks and open glue lines, and separate affected stock while assessing the batch.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
