12% duty on women's woven briefs

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 6208 covers women's or girls' woven underwear and nightwear. This guide covers women's woven briefs within its other-garment lines. The relevant cotton, man-made fibre and other-textile lines all carry 12% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no duty suspension.

The other-textile lines 6208 99 00 91 and 6208 99 00 99 attach CITES import and export controls. CITES covers animals, plants, their parts and derivatives, and items made from them. If a material is CITES-listed, check the permit requirement before ordering. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirement and documents for goods from China.

Confirm the commodity code using the fabric construction, fibre composition and printing method. For knitted alternatives, see women's knitted briefs. Keep woven and knitted styles separate in the order specification.

Specify the woven shell, gusset and elastic

Specify the shell fabric, fibre composition, weave, weight, finish and colour. Describe the gusset fabric separately, including its coverage and how its edges are enclosed. Agree the rise, waistband position, leg opening, seam placement and size chart with measurement tolerances. Woven fabric needs a fit assessment that considers movement as well as appearance.

Agree waistband and leg elastic width, stretch and recovery, lace softness and seam construction against an approved sample. Check fibre-content label artwork against the supplied materials: textile labels must show fibre content. Agree care instructions and size labels as purchasing specifications. Consumer products sold in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 1,000 pairs of women's cotton woven briefs; FOB value and freight are illustrative. under 6208 91 00 90, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,800. Duty at 12% is £816. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,616, so it is £1,523.20. Import taxes total £2,339.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £816 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure the waist, rise, leg openings and gusset placement against the approved size chart; assess sitting and bending in the sample.

Seams and gusset: check seam slippage, skipped stitches, exposed edges and uneven gusset attachment; feel for rough seams against the skin.

Elastic and fabric: check waistband and leg elastic recovery after washing, fabric shrinkage, print transfer and colour bleeding onto the gusset.

Labels and packing: compare fibre labels, size labels and agreed care instructions with the approved artwork; check size assortments, stains and damp packaging. Use the inspection guide to set the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A woven shell can look correct when laid flat yet pull across the hips or restrict movement when worn. Slippery fabric can open at the seams, while elastic may twist inside its casing or lose recovery after washing. A displaced gusset, rough lace or bulky seam can make an otherwise correctly sized garment uncomfortable.

Fabric substitutions can change shrinkage, fit and the accuracy of the fibre label. Compare bulk fabric and finished garments with the approved sample, and agree how failed measurements or wash checks will be handled before dispatch.
