UK duty on women's knitted bed jackets

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 6108 covers women's or girls' knitted or crocheted underwear, nightwear, dressing gowns and similar articles. This guide covers women's knitted bed jackets within the other articles lines, divided by fibre composition. All the table lines carry 12% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspensions for these lines.

The tariff attaches CITES import and export controls to 6108 99 00 10, and a CITES export control to 6108 99 00 90. The cotton and man-made fibre lines have no attached controls in the record. For CITES-listed material from China, arrange the applicable UK and Chinese permits, use a designated port and present the documents at the border. Have your customs broker confirm the species-specific requirements before shipment.

Confirm the commodity code against the finished garment's construction and fibre composition. For the wider product family, see women's knitted dressing gowns. Import VAT is normally 20%; the duty and VAT guide explains the calculation.

Specify seated fit, warmth and front fastenings

Specify a short nightwear jacket intended for use in bed, including back length, chest width, shoulder width, sleeve length and upper-arm room. Approve its fit while the wearer sits against pillows and reaches forwards. Check that the back does not bunch, the neckline does not pull and cuffs leave the hands free.

Agree fibre composition, knit structure, fabric weight, brushing, lining and trim separately. Compare warmth, softness and surface shedding with an approved finished sample. Specify front overlap and fastenings that the wearer can operate without bulky buttons pressing against the body. Agree wash checks for shrinkage, pilling and neckline recovery.

For sale in Great Britain, textile labels must show fibre content. Confirm the applicable adult-nightwear fire-safety labelling requirements, including wording, colour, position and attachment, with Trading Standards before production. Approve a durable, securely attached label at the neck or beside the size label once the applicable requirements have been confirmed.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 2,000 women's knitted bed jackets under 6108 92 00 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £19,200. Duty at 12% is £2,304. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,504, so it is £4,300.80. Import taxes total £6,604.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,304 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure the body and sleeves against the approved specification; check front overlap, seated comfort, shoulder movement and whether the back bunches against pillows.

Fastenings and seams: operate each fastening, check attachment and alignment, and inspect underarm seams, neck binding and cuffs for rough edges or skipped stitches.

Fabric and washing: compare shade, brushing and softness with the approved sample; wash as agreed, then assess shrinkage, pilling, shedding and distorted hems.

Labels and packing: check fibre content and the approved fire-safety wording, colour, position and attachment; verify sizes and inspect for dampness or stains using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A bed jacket can fit when standing but pull across the shoulders or ride up when the wearer sits against pillows. Narrow sleeves restrict reaching, while a stiff button placket presses against the chest. Approve the intended seated use and retain the finished sample for bulk comparison.

Bulk fabric may feel softer initially but shed, pill or shrink after washing. Brushing can vary between batches, and neck binding may lose recovery. Missing or incorrect fire-safety labels create a separate acceptance problem. Record fabric, fit and label failures against the agreed specification before accepting the shipment.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on women's knitted bed jackets from China?

The relevant cotton, man-made fibre, wool or fine animal hair, and other textile material lines all carry 12% duty. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspensions.

Do women's bed jackets need a fire-safety label?

Confirm the applicable adult-nightwear fire-safety labelling requirements with Trading Standards, including any wording required when the garment does not meet the relevant flammability requirements. Approve the wording, colour, position and attachment before production.

Does the CITES control apply to every wool bed jacket?

The tariff attaches the control to the wool or fine animal hair line. Check the actual species and material with your customs broker; CITES-listed material needs the applicable permits and border arrangements.
