Sourcing wine coolers from China
Wine coolers from China under heading 8418 carry 0% UK duty across the relevant lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the code from the appliance design and refrigerant, and check the applicable refrigerant restrictions and wine-storage energy label before sale. Cambridge China Bridge sources wine coolers.

Wine-cooler duty and classification
Heading 8418 covers refrigerating equipment, including wine coolers. Household compression models, other household refrigerators and commercial refrigerated furniture have different lines. The table gives candidate classifications rather than a universal wine-cooler code. For the wider product family, see commercial fridges and display freezers. For vaccine storage equipment, see our vaccine fridge sourcing guide. For the reverse trade route, see our guide to exporting refrigeration to China.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. The tariff attaches an ozone-depleting-substance restriction and, on some lines, fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable declarations and requirements for the actual refrigerant and charge.
For equipment pre-charged with HFCs, registration and quota authorisations are required when annual imports reach 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent or more. Above 100 tonnes, a quota declaration of conformity is required. Send the specification, intended use, capacity and refrigerant details to your broker and confirm the commodity code before ordering.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Household built-in compression refrigerators, not pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 21 59 90 | 0% | None |
| Other household compression refrigerators up to 250 litres, without HFC pre-charge | 8418 21 91 90 | 0% | None |
| Other household compression refrigerators over 250 to 340 litres, without HFC pre-charge | 8418 21 99 90 | 0% | None |
| Household refrigerators other than compression type, not pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 29 00 90 | 0% | None |
| Other refrigerated showcases and counters, not pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 50 19 90 | 0% | None |
| Other refrigerating storage and display furniture, not pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 50 90 90 | 0% | None |
Specify wine storage, bottle fit and ventilation
Specify built-in or freestanding installation, compression or thermoelectric cooling, the temperature range for each compartment and the ambient conditions for testing. Agree bottle shapes and shelf layouts using your actual bottles. Check usable capacity with the shelves fitted, door-opening clearance, ventilation space, handle projection, vibration and operating noise.
Ask for model-specific energy test results, the energy label and product information sheet. Wine-storage labels must be clearly visible; built-in appliances have an attachment exception, but the label must still be easy to see. Suppliers must produce supporting technical documentation. For mains-powered coolers, confirm the applicable declaration of conformity and CE or UKCA marking requirements with the relevant product safety authority.
Agree the refrigerant and charge before approving the sample. Confirm with the relevant authority whether the proposed refrigerant is permitted for a hermetically sealed commercial refrigerator on the Great Britain market. Check the intended use rather than assuming that a glass door makes every wine cooler the same product.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 40 commercial wine-storage cabinets, not pre-charged with HFCs; illustrative order under 8418 50 90 90, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,000, so it is £6,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Temperature: run loaded sample cabinets under the agreed ambient conditions, compare displayed readings with independent measurements and check recovery after door openings.
Bottle storage: load the agreed bottle shapes, slide shelves fully, check stops and clearances, and look for bottles touching the glass or obstructing airflow.
Cabinet and packing: check glass, hinges, seals, levelling feet and drainage; inspect arriving cartons for crushing and confirm that the door and shelves stayed secured.
Documents and identity: match the model, refrigerant and charge on the rating plate to the reports, declaration and energy label. Use quality inspection to plan checks before dispatch.

What goes wrong
Capacity claims can fail when wider bottles are loaded or shelves are repositioned. A freestanding design enclosed in cabinetry can struggle to reject heat. Reject samples with uneven compartment temperatures, persistent condensation, shelf binding or vibration that remains after levelling.
A report for a similar cabinet may not match the compressor, controller or glass fitted to your order. Freeze the approved specification and require approval for substitutions. New equipment must not use ozone-depleting substances, apart from the official exception for recycled halons in critical uses, which is unrelated to wine storage. Confirm the tariff restriction with your broker.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on wine coolers from China?
The relevant heading 8418 lines in the supplied tariff snapshot carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Which commodity code should I use for a wine cooler?
Confirm household or commercial design, cooling method, capacity and refrigerant. The table lists candidate lines; ask your broker to classify the exact model.
Do wine coolers need an energy label?
Wine-storage appliances need a clearly visible energy label. For built-in appliances, it need not be attached to the cabinet, but must still be easy to see.
How do I check a supplier's bottle-capacity claim?
Load your actual bottle shapes with the agreed shelves fitted. Check shelf movement, door clearance and airflow, then run the cabinet loaded to verify temperature performance.
