Sourcing water-activated Mg batteries from China

Water-activated magnesium batteries provisionally fall under other primary batteries, with 4% UK duty from China and no suspension shown for that line. Battery mercury limits and producer duties apply; specify the activation water and test output under load. Cambridge China Bridge sources water-activated magnesium batteries.

Duty on water-activated magnesium batteries

Heading 8506 covers primary cells and primary batteries. For finished water-activated magnesium batteries, 8506 80 80 00 is a provisional classification under other primary cells and batteries. The table shows purchasing formats sharing that code, rather than separate tariff lines. Confirm the complete chemistry and whether the shipment contains standalone batteries or equipment incorporating them.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the supplied record gives 4% duty on Chinese goods under 8506 80 80 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. It attaches mercury import and export controls. The importer should confirm the mercury import-control requirement for the actual composition with their customs broker before shipment.

Give your broker the chemistry declaration, construction drawing and intended use to confirm the commodity code. For other chemistries, see the primary batteries guide. Keep this battery's classification separate from that of a complete light, beacon or other device.

Specify the activation water and loaded output

Specify the magnesium anode, cathode material, any salts supplied inside the battery, dimensions, terminals and polarity. State whether the intended activation medium is fresh water, seawater or a prepared salt solution. Agree the water conditions, filling or immersion method, activation time, operating orientation and output under the actual equipment load.

Ask for discharge curves using the agreed water and temperature conditions, and for evidence supporting dry storage life. Set acceptance criteria for start-up, operating duration, leakage and terminal corrosion. Request instructions covering activation, handling after use and disposal. Check samples in the intended housing, including its water inlet and drainage.

Batteries cannot contain more than 0.0005% mercury by weight. Confirm any cadmium restrictions and applicable exceptions for portable batteries with the relevant authority. Request composition and chemical test reports for the supplied design. Confirm the separate collection symbol and any chemical-symbol requirements with the relevant authority. UK businesses first placing batteries on the market should confirm their producer duties with the relevant authority; the registration route depends on battery type and quantity.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order, not a quotation: 200 water-activated magnesium batteries under 8506 80 80 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,600. Duty at 4% is £144. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,744, so it is £748.80. Import taxes total £892.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £144 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Activation: sample the production lot using the agreed water, temperature and filling method; record time to usable output and any units that fail to start.

Performance: measure voltage under the intended load and operating duration; check polarity, terminals and fit in the customer's equipment.

Dry packaging: inspect moisture barriers, seals and date codes; check samples for dampness, corrosion and evidence of premature activation. Agree any storage test through inspection planning.

Composition and marking: match chemical reports to the supplied anode and cathode design; check the separate collection symbol, required chemical symbols, batch identification and activation instructions.

What goes wrong

A sample may work in the supplier's salt solution but fail in the customer's fresh water. An unloaded voltage reading can also conceal poor output in the intended device. Reject performance evidence that omits the activation medium, temperature, load or test duration, and repeat the agreed test on production samples.

Moisture entering damaged packaging can leave batteries partly activated or corroded before use. Inspect packaging before wet testing, retain dry samples and investigate affected lots. A magnesium label alone does not establish the cathode composition or mercury content; check reports against the actual supplied design.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on water-activated magnesium batteries from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 4% for 8506 80 80 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Classification remains subject to the battery's actual composition and presentation.

Will water-activated magnesium batteries work in fresh water?

Specify fresh water explicitly and test production samples in it. Do not accept a seawater or salt-solution demonstration as proof of performance in your intended water.

What should I check before accepting the shipment?

Check dry packaging, corrosion, terminals and polarity. Activate production samples using the agreed water and measure output under the intended load throughout the required operating duration.

Do battery producer duties apply to an importer?

A UK business first placing batteries on the UK market should confirm its battery producer duties with the relevant authority. Confirm the battery category and registration route before sale; the route depends on type and quantity.
