Sourcing VRF air conditioning from China
VRF air-conditioning systems from China under the selected lines of heading 8415 carry 2% UK duty throughout, with no listed trade remedy. For pre-charged HFC equipment, confirm with the Environment Agency whether quota authorisations are required for your annual imports. Cambridge China Bridge sources VRF air-conditioning systems.

UK duty and refrigerant controls for VRF systems
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines of heading 8415 carried 2% duty on goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The heading covers air-conditioning machines and their parts. For VRF purchases, the relevant distinction is between a complete split system, other reversible equipment, separately supplied units and parts.
The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control on fluorinated greenhouse gases and an ozone-depleting-substance restriction to the selected lines. New VRF equipment must not use ozone-depleting substances. For pre-charged HFC equipment, check the annual quota position and F-gas declaration before shipment. Where quota authorisations or delegations are required, equipment cannot be imported into Great Britain without enough coverage. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable declarations and supporting documents.
Confirm the commodity code from the refrigerant, reversing function, equipment specification and how the shipment is presented. The table gives candidate lines, rather than a classification for every VRF configuration. For the wider heading, see rooftop packaged air conditioners.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Split-system air conditioners, pre-charged with HFCs | 8415 10 90 10 | 2% | None |
| Split-system air conditioners, other | 8415 10 90 90 | 2% | None |
| Other reversible heat-pump air conditioners, pre-charged with HFCs | 8415 81 00 91 | 2% | None |
| Other reversible heat-pump air conditioners, other | 8415 81 00 99 | 2% | None |
| Other air-conditioning units without a refrigerating unit | 8415 83 00 90 | 2% | None |
| Air-conditioning parts, pre-charged with HFCs | 8415 90 00 91 | 2% | None |
| Other air-conditioning parts | 8415 90 00 99 | 2% | None |
Specify the matched VRF system
Specify the outdoor modules, matched indoor-unit schedule, room loads, cooling and heating duties, heat-pump or heat-recovery operation, and branch joints or selector boxes. Record permitted pipe lengths, height differences, connection ratios, additional refrigerant calculations, power supply and control interfaces. Have the intended installer review the manufacturer's selection and piping drawings before approving the order.
Ask for performance and electrical safety reports for the exact equipment combination, its UKCA or CE declaration of conformity, wiring diagrams and spare control-board list. Electrical equipment must have clear English instructions. For applicable ecodesign rules, the declaration of conformity must be supported by technical documentation. Include installation, addressing, commissioning and fault-diagnosis instructions in the document review.
For imports into Great Britain, confirm with the Environment Agency which annual import thresholds, registration and quota authorisation requirements apply to the imported HFCs, and whether the pre-charged equipment needs an F-gas declaration of conformity. Calculate the annual total from each model's refrigerant and factory charge, rather than assessing each shipment separately.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one reversible VRF system for small business premises under 8415 81 00 91, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
System matching: check outdoor and indoor model references, controllers, branch components and firmware against the approved selection. Confirm every item is identified on the packing list.
Refrigerant and circuit: check nameplate refrigerant, factory charge and carbon dioxide equivalent against the documents. Review factory leak-test records and inspect service valves, capped connections and pipework for damage.
Function and safety: review electrical test records and witness an assembled sample operating in cooling and heating. Check indoor-unit addressing, controller communication, condensate drainage and any specified heat-recovery function.
Arrival and documents: inspect coils, cabinet feet, lifting damage and packaging moisture before installation. Reconcile serial numbers, manuals and accessories with the shipment records. Plan these checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A compatible-looking indoor unit can have the wrong control protocol, while substituted selector boxes or branch joints can make the delivered system differ from the approved design. Missing piping limits or additional-charge instructions leave the installer unable to confirm the proposed layout. Check the matched equipment schedule and complete document set before shipment.
Leaks, damaged coil fins, inadequate drainage and control-board faults can emerge during commissioning. Agree who provides diagnostic support, replacement boards and commissioning records before ordering. Arrange a qualified F-gas technician for installation, and give them the system selection and refrigerant information before the equipment arrives.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on VRF systems from China?
The selected lines of heading 8415 carry 2% duty on goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Confirm the code for the actual shipment.
Do VRF imports need F-gas quota authorisations?
For Great Britain, confirm with the Environment Agency which annual import thresholds, registration and quota authorisation requirements apply to imported HFCs, and whether pre-charged equipment needs an F-gas declaration of conformity.
Can I order indoor and outdoor VRF units separately?
Agree the matched model schedule and control compatibility before ordering. Ask your broker to classify the goods as shipped; separately supplied units or parts may use different lines from a complete system.
Who should install an imported VRF system?
Arrange a qualified F-gas technician. Have the intended installer review the equipment selection, piping layout, electrical supply and commissioning instructions before you approve the purchase.
