Sourcing marine air conditioning from China

Marine air-conditioning units from China carry a flat 2% UK duty across the selected lines. Refrigerant controls still apply: check the HFC quota position and whether any product ban or maritime exemption covers the actual system. Cambridge China Bridge sources marine air-conditioning units.

Marine air-conditioning duty and refrigerant controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8415 covers air-conditioning machines with a motor-driven fan and elements that change temperature and humidity. The selected other-unit lines cover reversible and cooling-only configurations potentially relevant to marine installations. Each carries 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no tariff suspension recorded.

The tariff attaches ozone-depleting substance and fluorinated greenhouse gas controls. New marine units must not use ozone-depleting substances as refrigerants. For HFC pre-charged equipment entering Great Britain, confirm registration, quota authorisation and declaration of conformity requirements with the Environment Agency or your customs broker. Give the broker the refrigerant and charge, and confirm the applicable customs documents before shipment.

Marine use alone does not settle classification. Confirm the mounting arrangement, whether refrigeration is incorporated, whether a reversal valve is fitted and the refrigerant supplied. The table contains candidate lines, not a classification ruling. Use finding your commodity code and the wider air conditioners and heat pumps guide.

Specify the seawater circuit and cabin installation

Specify self-contained or split construction, cooling-only or reversible operation, cabin heat load, available electrical supply and starting current. For seawater-cooled models, agree condenser materials, water temperature and flow conditions, pump duty, strainer arrangement and hose connections. State the mounting envelope, service access, duct resistance, condensate drain route, controller and included accessories. Request capacity results under the agreed air and water conditions.

Ask the Environment Agency or your customs broker whether the GB single-split air-conditioning ban applies to the actual system and whether its installation on maritime craft qualifies for an exception. Ask for electrical safety evidence, applicable conformity documents and installation drawings for the exact model; arrange a testing and certification review before approving production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 HFC pre-charged cooling-only marine air-conditioning units under 8415 82 00 91, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 2% is £640. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,640, so it is £6,528. Import taxes total £7,168; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £640 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Refrigerant: compare the nameplate, charge record and shipment documents; inspect refrigerant joints and request production leak-test records.

Water circuit: check the agreed condenser material, hose connections, pump and strainer. At arrival, inspect for impact damage and run a controlled water-circuit leak test before installation.

Performance: run cooling and, where fitted, heating with the agreed water supply and duct arrangement. Record temperatures, current, vibration, noise and condensate drainage; check low-flow protection.

Documents: match model identities across labels, reports, wiring diagrams and manuals. For units covered by electrical equipment safety rules, the importer must ensure instructions are in easily understandable English. Include these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A catalogue capacity can disappoint when tested with warmer seawater or restrictive ducting. Other failures include substituted condenser materials, leaking water connections, pumps that cannot deliver the agreed flow, blocked condensate drains and starting current that the vessel's supply cannot support.

Agree the test conditions and component list before ordering. Approve a sample with the intended pump and controller, preserve its test record and compare production units against it. Obtain replacement controller and pump details, and check that refrigerant paperwork describes the equipment actually shipped.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on marine air-conditioning units from China?

The selected heading 8415 lines carry 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no tariff suspension recorded in the supplied tariff data.

Are marine split air conditioners covered by the refrigerant ban?

Ask the Environment Agency or your customs broker whether single-split systems fitted to maritime craft qualify for an exception to the GB single-split ban. Confirm the position for the actual equipment and intended installation.

Do marine air-conditioning imports need HFC quota authorisations?

For Great Britain, ask the Environment Agency or your customs broker to confirm registration, quota authorisation and declaration of conformity requirements for annual HFC imports in pre-charged equipment.

What should I check on a seawater-cooled marine air conditioner?

Check condenser material, pump flow, hose connections, low-flow protection and condensate drainage. Test capacity under the agreed water and air conditions, and check starting current against the vessel's supply.
