Vitex honey duty and import controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 7 October 2026, heading 0409 covers natural honey. Vitex honey falls within the other natural honey line, 0409 00 00 90, carrying 16% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this line. It attaches veterinary control and import control of organic products.

For Great Britain, check China's current country eligibility and the packer's registration with its competent authority before ordering. Arrange the health certificate and confirm IPAFFS pre-notification and entry through a suitable border control post with APHA or your customs broker. For organic Vitex honey, each consignment needs a certificate of inspection issued by the exporter's control body; confirm the organic import arrangements before shipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the actual composition and processing details. Honey preparations and confectionery need separate classification. Only the supplied other natural honey line is relevant to Vitex honey. For the wider heading, see the acacia honey guide.

Specify the Vitex floral claim and processing

Ask the supplier to identify the botanical source behind its Vitex claim, the harvest location and the lots used in any blend. Agree bulk drums or retail jars, the filling weight, acceptable colour and flavour against a retained sample, and the heating and filtration process. Ask a specialist laboratory to assess the floral claim using pollen analysis alongside supporting origin records.

Set acceptance criteria for moisture, hydroxymethylfurfural, diastase activity and authenticity testing, with veterinary drug and pesticide residue screening. Confirm applicable honey composition and labelling requirements, including country-of-origin information, with the relevant trading standards authority. Match the label wording to the product and processing records before printing packaging.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 tonnes of bulk Vitex honey in drums under 0409 00 00 90, invoiced at £42,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £45,500. Duty at 16% is £7,280. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £52,780, so it is £10,556. Import taxes total £17,836; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £7,280 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Floral identity: match the Vitex claim, harvest records and pollen report to the delivered lot and retained sample.

Composition and authenticity: check lot-specific moisture, hydroxymethylfurfural, diastase, added-syrup and residue reports; compare arrival samples with the pre-shipment results.

Packaging: inspect drum linings or jar closures, seals, leakage, foreign matter and signs of fermentation; match container lot marks to the packing list.

Documents and labels: match the packer, lot and origin across the health certificate, reports and labels. For organic stock, check the consignment's certificate of inspection. Arrange arrival inspection around these checks.

What goes wrong

A Vitex description on an invoice does not establish floral identity. Missing harvest records, an unexplained blend or a pollen report for a different lot leaves the claim unsupported. Require evidence for the shipped batch rather than accepting a supplier's generic honey report.

Added syrup, excessive moisture and overheating can undermine an otherwise acceptable sample. Wet honey can ferment, while overheating raises hydroxymethylfurfural and damages quality. Test before shipment, retain a sealed sample and hold suspect arrival stock for investigation before releasing it for sale.
