UK duty on retail viscose yarn

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 5511 covers yarn other than sewing thread, made from man-made staple fibres and put up for retail sale. Viscose staple-fibre retail yarn falls within the artificial-fibre line, 5511 30 00 00. See the wider hand-knitting yarn guide for other fibres.

The supplied tariff record lists 0% duty for goods from China on this line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is separate from customs duty; see UK import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using the actual fibre composition and retail packaging. The retail-sale definition depends on the ball or hank weight rules in the textile section notes. A blend or a different put-up needs its own classification check.

Specify viscose yarn and its ball band

Specify fibre composition, yarn count, ply, twist, net ball weight, metres per ball, shade, dye-lot identification and winding format. Approve a knitted or crocheted sample for handle, drape, splitting and stitch definition. Wash that sample using the proposed care instructions and compare its dimensions and appearance afterwards.

Consumer yarn must state fibre composition; confirm the permitted fibre names with Trading Standards. Packaged yarn sold by weight must show its weight on the label. Agree the conditioning and weighing method before production. Also agree the needle and hook recommendations, tension information and care instructions to print, checking them against the approved sample.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 4,000 balls of viscose hand-knitting yarn, each 100 g under 5511 30 00 00, invoiced at £2,200 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,400, so it is £680. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Composition: check a laboratory result against the ordered viscose content and the printed fibre declaration.

Weight and length: weigh conditioned samples without their bands and check usable yarn length against the specification and label.

Shade and washing: compare each dye lot with the approved colour sample under consistent lighting; check colour transfer and the washed swatch.

Winding and packing: unwind sampled balls for knots, breaks, tangles and splitting; match dye-lot identifiers on bands and cartons. Repeat arrival checks against retained samples using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A ball can meet its stated weight yet contain less yarn length because the yarn is thicker than approved. Different dye lots can look close in the ball but show a visible join when knitted. Loose winding, splitting and excessive knots interrupt knitting, while washing can expose colour loss or a change in the fabric's dimensions.

Keep a retained skein and washed swatch from each approved lot. Agree how shade differences, short length and winding defects will be handled before ordering. Check the final band artwork against the tested composition rather than copying the supplier's stock description.
