Sourcing vegan egg replacer blends from China

Relevant heading 2106 lines carry 0% to 12% UK duty from China; other food blends commonly fall on lines carrying 8% or 12%, depending on composition. Prepacked products must emphasise allergens in the ingredients list, and a vegan label gives no guarantee against animal ingredients. Cambridge China Bridge sources vegan egg replacer blends.

Duty depends on the complete recipe

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 2106 covers food preparations not elsewhere specified or included. The candidate lines below carry 0%, 8% or 12% from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. These are alternative classification branches, not interchangeable codes. Listed suspensions cover specified soya, coconut, liquorice or dairy preparations and exclude mixtures containing those products; do not assume an ordinary egg replacer blend qualifies.

The selected lines attach veterinary and organic import controls; 2106 90 92 85 also attaches seal-product control. Ask your customs broker to confirm the veterinary and seal-control requirements against the complete recipe. For organic imports from China into Great Britain, confirm the certificate-of-inspection requirement with the relevant organic control body. The exporter's control body issues it. Treat an animal-origin ingredient as a reason to reassess both the vegan specification and import route.

Give the broker the complete formulation, ingredient percentages, manufacturing process and intended use to confirm the commodity code. A starch-based baking blend and a protein concentrate can take different branches. The pea protein and protein isolates guide explains the wider protein distinction.

Specify the egg function and baking method

Specify whether the blend replaces egg for binding, emulsification, aeration or setting. Name the intended application, such as cakes, biscuits or batter. Agree the powder dose, water addition, mixing sequence, resting conditions and baking method through trials in your own recipe. A blend that binds biscuit dough may perform poorly in an aerated cake.

Request the full starch, plant-protein, gum, raising-agent and emulsifier formulation, including ingredient origins and processing aids. Agree moisture, particle size, dispersibility, flavour, colour, packaging barrier and storage conditions. Food intended for human consumption must meet general food safety legal requirements. A vegan label does not guarantee the absence of animal-origin ingredients, so review shared production lines and cleaning evidence.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Bulk bags of starch-based vegan egg replacer for a bakery trial, illustrative under 2106 90 98 49, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,500. Duty at 8% is £360. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,860, so it is £972. Import taxes total £1,332; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £360 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Function: compare the production batch with the approved sample in your own recipe; check batter stability, rise, crumb, binding and flavour after cooling.

Batch evidence: match the certificate of analysis to bag and pallet batch identifiers; review moisture, microbiological results and agreed contaminant and allergen tests.

Labels: compare the ingredients with the approved formulation. Prepacked food must emphasise allergens each time they appear in the ingredients list; check soya and wheat where relevant.

Arrival condition: inspect liners, seals and bags for tears, dampness, caking and foreign material; retain a batch sample before releasing stock.

What goes wrong

A supplier substitutes starch, protein or gum without approval, changing water uptake and leaving cakes dense, gummy or unstable. Excess raising agent can leave an aftertaste, while poor moisture protection causes lumps and uneven dosing. Keep an approved recipe and retained sample, and agree that formulation changes need your written acceptance.

A vegan claim can be mistaken for an allergen guarantee, while shared equipment introduces cross-contact risk. Missing allergen emphasis or a code chosen from the product name creates avoidable problems. Review the recipe, labels and batch evidence together, and use the quality inspection guide to define release checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on vegan egg replacer blends from China?

The relevant candidate lines carry 0% to 12%. Other food blends under 2106 90 98 49 carry 8%, while 2106 90 92 85 carries 12%. Confirm classification from the complete recipe.

Does vegan mean an egg replacer is allergen-free?

No. A vegan label does not guarantee the absence of animal-origin ingredients. Check the allergen information and the factory's controls for shared equipment and cross-contact.

What should I test before ordering an egg replacer blend?

Trial it in your actual recipe using agreed dosing and mixing instructions. Compare rise, crumb, binding, flavour and stability after cooling, then repeat the trial with the production batch.

Do organic egg replacer blends from China need an inspection certificate?

Confirm the certificate-of-inspection requirement for your organic import into Great Britain with the relevant organic control body. The certificate is issued by the exporter's control body in the country of export.
